Forma e uso
a few / a little, much / many, a lot of, plenty of, none of — dizer quanto ou quantos
| Sentido | + substantivo no plural | + substantivo incontável |
|---|---|---|
| Uma grande quantidade | many friends · a lot of / lots of friends | much time · a lot of / lots of time |
| Mais do que suficiente | plenty of chairs | plenty of time |
| Uma pequena quantidade (suficiente) | a few eggs | a little milk |
| Muito pouco — quase nada | few people | little traffic |
| Perguntar a quantidade | How many students…? | How much sugar…? |
Veja a lição “Substantivos contáveis e incontáveis”.
2.Much, many e a lot of
Many + substantivo no plural, much + substantivo incontável.
How many cousins have you got?
Quantos primos você tem?
We don't have much time, so let's take a taxi.
How much is this bag?
Quanto custa esta bolsa? (para perguntar o preço: How much…?)
Are there many tourists in Sa Pa in winter?
Em frases afirmativas, os nativos geralmente preferem a lot of / lots of. “I have much time” soa muito estranho. Many é possível em frases afirmativas (Many people think…), mas soa um pouco formal. Exceção: too much, so much, too many, so many são totalmente normais em frases afirmativas.
Lan has a lot of friends at university.
A Lan tem muitos amigos na faculdade.
I drink lots of water when it's hot.
Bebo muita água quando está calor.
You put too much salt in the soup.
Você colocou sal demais na sopa.
There were so many people at the night market!
Tinha tanta gente na feira noturna!
- a lot of + substantivo; sem substantivo depois, tire o of: I eat a lot of fruit. / I eat a lot.
- Nas respostas curtas o substantivo também cai: How many eggs do we need? — Not many. / Just a few.
- Much sozinho depois de um verbo (sem very / so / too) é usado principalmente em negativas e perguntas: I don't sleep much. Numa afirmativa, diga: I sleep a lot.
3.A few / a little ou few / little
A palavrinha a muda o sentido.
| Positivo: alguns | Negativo: quase nada | |
|---|---|---|
| Substantivo no plural | I have a few friends here. | I have few friends here. |
| Substantivo incontável | There's a little rice left. | There's little rice left. |

Few / little sozinhos soam um pouco formais. No dia a dia, as pessoas costumam dizer not many / not much ou only a few / only a little: Not many people came. / I only have a little time.
4.Plenty of e none of
Don't rush. We've got plenty of time.
Sem pressa. Temos tempo de sobra.
There are plenty of cheap restaurants near the station.
Depois de none of vem the / my / these… + substantivo, ou um pronome: us / you / them / it.
None of my friends can cook.
Nenhum dos meus amigos sabe cozinhar.
I tried three shops, but none of them had my size.
Fui a três lojas, mas nenhuma tinha o meu tamanho.

Quantos ingressos sobraram? — Nenhum. (none sozinho, sem substantivo)
- Se o substantivo não tiver the / my… na frente, use no, e não none of: I have no friends here (não: none of friends). Veja a lição “No / none / any, nothing / nobody”.
- None of + substantivo no plural: o verbo pode ficar no singular ou no plural — None of my friends smoke / smokes. Na fala é comum o plural; na escrita formal, o singular.
- Para dizer “all / most / some of…”, veja a lição “All / most / some / none of”.
