Forma e uso
a few / a little, much / many, a lot of, plenty of, none of — dire quanto o quanti
Solo a lot of, lots of, plenty of vanno bene con entrambi.
| Significato | + sostantivo plurale | + sostantivo non numerabile |
|---|---|---|
| Una grande quantità | many friends · a lot of / lots of friends | much time · a lot of / lots of time |
| Più che sufficiente | plenty of chairs | plenty of time |
| Una piccola quantità (sufficiente) | a few eggs | a little milk |
| Pochissimo, quasi niente | few people | little traffic |
| Chiedere la quantità | How many students…? | How much sugar…? |
2.Much, many e a lot of
Many + sostantivo plurale, much + sostantivo non numerabile.
How many cousins have you got?
Quanti cugini hai?
We don't have much time, so let's take a taxi.
How much is this bag?
Quanto costa questa borsa? (per chiedere il prezzo: How much…?)
Are there many tourists in Sa Pa in winter?
Ci sono molti turisti a Sa Pa d'inverno?
Nelle frasi affermative i madrelingua di solito preferiscono a lot of / lots of. “I have much time” suona molto strano. Many si può usare nelle affermative (Many people think…), ma suona un po' formale. Eccezione: too much, so much, too many, so many sono normalissimi nelle frasi affermative.

C'era così tanta gente al mercato notturno!
- a lot of + sostantivo; se dopo non c'è il sostantivo, togli of: I eat a lot of fruit. / I eat a lot.
- Anche nelle risposte brevi il sostantivo sparisce: How many eggs do we need? — Not many. / Just a few.
- Much da solo dopo un verbo (senza very / so / too) si usa soprattutto nelle negative e nelle domande: I don't sleep much.
3.A few / a little o few / little
|---|---|---|
| Sostantivo plurale | I have a few friends here. | I have few friends here. |
| Sostantivo non numerabile | There's a little rice left. | There's little rice left. |

Few / little da soli suonano un po' formali. Nel parlato di tutti i giorni si dice più spesso not many / not much oppure only a few / only a little: Not many people came. / I only have a little time.
4.Plenty of e none of

Dopo none of viene the / my / these… + sostantivo, oppure un pronome: us / you / them / it.

- Se davanti al sostantivo non c'è the / my…, usa no, non none of: I have no friends here (non: none of friends). Vedi la lezione “No / none / any, nothing / nobody”.
- None of + sostantivo plurale: il verbo può essere singolare o plurale: None of my friends smoke / smokes.
- Per dire “all / most / some of…”, vedi la lezione “All / most / some / none of”.
