1
Though, thought, through, tough.
2
Why do these words all sound so different when they look really similar?
3
Well, if you ask yourself this question while learning English, you're going to drive yourself crazy.
4
Because English spelling and pronunciation do not always match.
5
In fact, if you come across a new word in English, you cannot rely on the spelling to know how to pronounce this word.
6
Because English is not a phonetic language.
7
And that means just that.
8
We cannot know the phonetics just by how a word is spelled.
9
And this is just one of the reasons why English is such a hard language to learn.
10
Now, you might think compared to other languages, English is pretty easy.
11
We see English all over the world.
12
It has become the international language.
13
It's used globally, also for non-native speakers to communicate with one another.
14
So you may see English everywhere.
15
You understand that English is an important language to learn.
16
Otherwise, you wouldn't have clicked on this video.
17
But why is it so difficult?
18
It's not just that you are bad at learning languages.
19
English is in fact a really hard language to learn.
20
And although I'm a native speaker, so English was obviously not difficult for me to learn, but I do live in a different country.
21
I live in Germany.
22
I speak a different language in my day to day life.
23
So I understand the particular struggles that come with learning a second language.
24
So you're not bad at it.
25
English is hard.
26
Let's go over.
27
why in this video, and maybe this can help you understand some of the problems you're encountering
28
or overcome some of those hurdles in your English learning journey.
29
English made easy with Claire.
30
Okay, so I already covered that pronunciation and spelling do not always match in English.
31
Like, Why does tough rhyme with enough but not cough?
32
So something can be spelled with the exact same ending, the exact same letters, and it just is not pronounced the same at all.
33
And there's no reason why.
34
If you ask me why is this word cough and why is this word tough, there's no answer.
35
There's no reason that's just the way it is.
36
English is also really difficult because there are so many exceptions.
37
So you might learn a grammar rule like a verb in the past tense ends with ed,
38
but there are multiple verbs whose simple past tense form don't end in ed at all.
39
In fact, it made the word may change completely.
40
Like the past tense of go is went or the past tense of see is saw.
41
So they obviously don't follow the ed rule ending.
42
So there are lots of exceptions.
43
Same with plural words.
44
Normally you add an s to the end of a word or es.
45
If there are more than one of that noun.
46
That's the general rule.
47
But of course, there are always exceptions like one child,
48
two children, one person, two people, one sheep, two sheep.
49
Now, another reason why English is so difficult is that just one word can have so many different meanings.
50
Let's take the verb run.
51
Okay, so if you learn run in a textbook, run means to move really fast.
52
So not walk, but run, right?
53
If you had to define the verb run or use it in a sentence, you would take this meaning.
54
I run a mile every day.
55
But then what about the sentence, my nose is running?
56
My nose is running?
57
This use of the verb run means that your nose is, well, flowing, right?
58
Maybe you have a cold or you ate something spicy and you have mucus coming out of your nose.
אולי הצטננת או שאכלת משהו חריף ויצא לך ריר מהאף.
59
Then we could say my nose is running.
אז נוכל לומר שהאף שלי נוזל.
60
Similarly, you could say the water is running.
באופן דומה, אפשר לומר שהמים זורמים.
61
Hey, you left the faucet on the water's running.
היי, השארת את הברז פתוח, המים זורמים.
62
It means the water is coming out of the faucet.
זה אומר שהמים יוצאים מהברז.
63
But then you also have the use of this verb to be to run a meeting, run a business, run a program.
אבל אז יש לך גם את השימוש בפועל הזה to להיות to run a meeting, to run a business, to run a program.
64
And that just means to operate those things.
וזה פשוט אומר להפעיל את הדברים האלה.
65
So that's a completely different meaning.
אז זו משמעות שונה לחלוטין.
66
You can say I'm running late.
אפשר להגיד שאני מאחר.
67
That means I will be late or I am late.
זה אומר שאני אאחר או שאני אאחר.
68
Or if you run out of something, it means you no longer have it.
או שאם נגמר לך משהו, זה אומר שאין לך אותו יותר.
69
You could say, I ran out of milk this morning, so I don't have any more milk.
אפשר לומר, נגמר לי החלב הבוקר, אז אין לי עוד חלב.
70
So you couldn't just translate those sentences by taking each individual word and translating the verb run to mean run.
אז אי אפשר פשוט לתרגם את המשפטים האלה על ידי לקיחת כל מילה בנפרד ותרגום הפועל "לרוץ" ל"לרוץ".
71
You have to look at the wider context of the sentence,
צריך להסתכל על ההקשר הרחב יותר של המשפט,
72
of the situation, to understand which meaning of the verb run is being used.
של הסיטואציה, כדי להבין איזו משמעות של הפועל "לרוץ" נמצאת בשימוש.
73
And this goes for multiple words in the English language.
וזה נכון לגבי מספר מילים בשפה האנגלית.
74
Which also brings me to my next reason why English is so hard to learn, and that is phrasal verbs.
מה שמוביל אותי גם לסיבה הבאה שלי מדוע אנגלית כל כך קשה ללמידה, והיא פעלים פראזליים.
75
If you've been studying English for a while, you have definitely come across phrasal verbs.
אם אתם לומדים אנגלית כבר זמן מה, בהחלט נתקלתם בפעלים פראזליים.
76
And if you aren't familiar, phrasal verbs are a verb paired with a preposition or a particle.
ואם אתם לא מכירים, פעלים פראסליים הם פועל המצומד למילת יחס או חלקיק.
77
And it gives this phrase when they're used together, it gives it a specific meaning.
וזה נותן לביטוי הזה, כאשר הם משמשים יחד, זה נותן לו משמעות ספציפית.
78
So I mentioned run out of something, that's a phrasal verb to run out of.
אז הזכרתי "נגמר לו משהו", זהו פועל ניסוחי שמטרתו להיגמר.
79
So the verb run doesn't mean what it means on its own, but when it is paired with out
אז הפועל run לא אומר את מה שהוא אומר בפני עצמו, אלא כשהוא משויך ל-out
80
and of it takes on a different meaning
וזה מקבל משמעות שונה
81
and there are countless phrasal verbs in the english language i
ויש אינספור פעלים פראזליים בשפה האנגלית
82
couldn't possibly go over all of them in one video
אי אפשר לעבור על כולם בסרטון אחד
83
but just to give you an example the verb get on its own another one like run
אבל רק כדי לתת לך דוגמה, הפועל "להסתדר" עוד אחד כמו "לרוץ"
84
that has so many different meanings based on context.
שיש לה כל כך הרבה משמעויות שונות בהתאם להקשר.
85
It also has a ton of phrasal verbs.
יש בו גם המון פעלים ניסוחיים.
86
To get up is to wake up.
לקום זה להתעורר.
87
To get over is to recover.
להתגבר זה להתאושש.
88
Get along is to have a good relationship.
להסתדר זה לקיים מערכת יחסים טובה.
89
We have get back, get away, get through.
אנחנו צריכים לחזור, לברוח, לעבור.
90
You get the idea.
אתה מבין את הרעיון.
91
So if you're learning English, you may see a verb that you know, but it's paired with one little preposition and it's changed the meaning completely.
אז אם אתם לומדים אנגלית, ייתכן שתראו פועל שאתם מכירים, אבל הוא משולב עם מילת יחס קטנה אחת וזה משנה את המשמעות לחלוטין.
92
So that makes it so difficult to learn.
אז זה כל כך מקשה על הלמידה.
93
Now you've learned English from a textbook or an app.
עכשיו למדת אנגלית מספר לימוד או מאפליקציה.
94
You have the vocabulary.
יש לך את אוצר המילים.
95
You think you know the grammar.
אתה חושב שאתה יודע את הדקדוק.
96
And then you listen to native speakers.
ואז אתה מקשיב לדוברי שפת אם.
97
Maybe you watch a movie or a TV show.
אולי תצפה בסרט או בתוכנית טלוויזיה.
98
Or maybe you're talking to them in real life.
או שאולי אתה מדבר איתם במציאות.
99
And you don't feel like you can understand anything.
ואתה לא מרגיש שאתה יכול להבין כלום.
100
And that's because native speakers don't pronounce words individually as you may have been taught.
וזה בגלל שדוברי שפת אם לא מבטאים מילים בנפרד כפי שאולי לימדו אותך.
101
So you may see this sentence and read it as, what are you going to do?
אז אתם עשויים לראות את המשפט הזה ולקרוא אותו כ, מה אתם הולכים לעשות?
102
This is not wrong, but it's not how native speakers speak.
זה לא פסול, אבל ככה לא מדברים דוברי שפת אם.
103
A native speaker would say, what are you going to do?
דובר שפת אם היה אומר, מה אתה הולך לעשות?
104
What are you going to do?
מה אתה הולך לעשות?
105
What are you going to do with it, Dani?
מה אתה הולך לעשות עם זה, דני?
106
What are you going to do with it?
מה אתה הולך לעשות עם זה?
107
15 minutes.
15 דקות.
108
And that's a lot of different sounds than what you were taught or what you see here.
ואלה הרבה צלילים שונים ממה שלימדו אותך או ממה שאתה רואה כאן.
109
Where did the T go at the end of what?
לאן נעלמה ה-T בסוף של מה?
110
Where did the ING go at the end of going?
לאן נעלם ה-ING בסוף?
111
why is it not pronounced to?
למה זה לא מבוטא ל-?
112
And that's because you don't learn connected speech and you don't learn the unstressed pronunciation of little words like you and to.
וזה בגלל שאתה לא לומד דיבור מחובר ואתה לא לומד את ההגייה הלא מודגשת של מילים קטנות כמו אתה ו-to.
113
And there's also something within the linguistic world when talking about speech called assimilations.
ויש גם משהו בעולם הלשוני כשמדברים על דיבור שנקרא הטמעות.
114
And that's when two sounds that appear next to each other form a completely different sound.
וזה כאשר שני צלילים המופיעים זה ליד זה יוצרים צליל שונה לחלוטין.
115
So you may pronounce this sentence, did you eat yet?
אז אתה רשאי לבטא את המשפט הזה, אכלת כבר?
116
Did you eat yet?
כבר אכלת?
117
Which again, is not wrong, but as a native speaker, I would never say this sentence like that.
ושוב, זה לא טעות, אבל כדובר שפת אם, אני לעולם לא הייתי אומר את המשפט הזה ככה.
118
I might say, do you eat yet?
אני יכול לשאול, אתה כבר אוכל?
119
Do you eat yet?
אתה כבר אוכל?
120
Or did you eat yet?
או שאכלת כבר?
121
Did you eat yet?
כבר אכלת?
122
Did you eat yet?
כבר אכלת?
123
Did you eat yet, honey?
אכלת כבר, מותק?
124
And you can hear that did and you together have created a completely new sound. Did you? Did you?
ואתם יכולים לשמוע שכן, ויחד יצרתם צליל חדש לגמרי. עשיתם? עשיתם?
125
So we hear a jj sound in there.
אז אנחנו שומעים שם צליל של ג'יי.
126
But you don't see the letter J, right, that often has that sound in English.
אבל אתה לא רואה את האות J, נכון, שלעתים קרובות יש לה את הצליל הזה באנגלית.
127
Well, when you have the d sound next to a y sound, we have a case of this assimilation and it creates a new sound, jj.
ובכן, כאשר יש את הצליל d ליד צליל y, יש לנו מקרה של הטמעה זו והיא יוצרת צליל חדש, jj.
128
Did you eat yet?
כבר אכלת?
129
And you'll notice that I drop the T's at the ends of the words like eat and yet.
ותשימו לב שאני משמיט את האותיות T בסוף מילים כמו לאכול ו-עדיין.
130
I don't aspirate those T's.
אני לא שואף את ה-T האלה.
131
T, T, not like that, but the sound is stopped.
ט, ט, לא ככה, אבל הצליל נעצר.
132
That's another concept we have within connected speech in English, this glottal stop.
זהו מושג נוסף שיש לנו בדיבור מחובר באנגלית, עצירה גלוטלית זו.
133
So you can study the language, you can read it, you can learn the grammar as much as you want and learn the proper pronunciation of words.
אז אתה יכול ללמוד את השפה, אתה יכול לקרוא אותה, אתה יכול ללמוד את הדקדוק כמה שתרצה וללמוד את ההגייה הנכונה של מילים.
134
and then native speakers will speak with connected speech,
ואז דוברי שפת אם ידברו עם דיבור מחובר,
135
creating all kinds of new sounds when the words are put together next to certain words.
יצירת כל מיני צלילים חדשים כאשר המילים מחוברות יחד ליד מילים מסוימות.
136
And suddenly you cannot understand English.
ופתאום אתה לא מבין אנגלית.
137
And that can be really discouraging.
וזה יכול ממש להרתיע.
138
So I hope that so far in this video,
אז אני מקווה שעד כה בסרטון הזה,
139
you are starting to feel validated for struggling to understand native speakers or struggle to take your English to the next level.
אתם מתחילים להרגיש מוצדקים על כך שאתם מתקשים להבין דוברי שפת אם או מתקשים לקחת את האנגלית שלכם לשלב הבא.
140
because it is so hard.
כי זה כל כך קשה.
141
Now, I wouldn't want to explain to you why English is so hard and not offer you some kind of solution here.
עכשיו, אני לא רוצה להסביר לך למה אנגלית כל כך קשה וגם לא להציע לך איזשהו פתרון כאן.
142
And if this is your first time kind of hearing about connected speech and glottal stops and assimilation,
ואם זו הפעם הראשונה שאתם שומעים על דיבור מחובר, עצירות גלוטליות והטמעה,
143
then check out my shadowing practice playlist right here on my YouTube.
אז צפו ברשימת השמעה שלי לתרגול צלליות ממש כאן ביוטיוב שלי.
144
You can get those videos for free.
אתה יכול לקבל את הסרטונים האלה בחינם.
145
And I explain in more detail how this can improve your pronunciation and improve your understanding of the language.
ואני מסביר ביתר פירוט כיצד זה יכול לשפר את ההגייה שלך ואת הבנתך את השפה.
146
But I also run an online English community on the school app called Next Level English.
אבל אני גם מנהל קהילת אנגלית מקוונת באפליקציית בית הספר שנקראת Next Level English.
147
And I do live shadowing practices over in my community every single week.
ואני עושה תרגילי צללינג בשידור חי בקהילה שלי כל שבוע.
148
So I know a lot of you have been asking if I can make shadowing practice videos every week consistently.
אז אני יודע שהרבה מכם שאלו אם אני יכול להכין סרטוני תרגול צלליות כל שבוע באופן עקבי.
149
And I am definitely trying to create more consistent videos for you here on YouTube.
ואני בהחלט מנסה ליצור עבורכם סרטונים עקביים יותר כאן ביוטיוב.
150
But if you do join my community, you will get a shadowing practice every single week.
אבל אם תצטרפו לקהילה שלי, תקבלו אימון צללים כל שבוע.
151
And you can join live as a premium member.
ואתה יכול להצטרף בשידור חי כחבר פרימיום.
152
You can also join our live group calls where you can practice speaking out loud with other learners and with me,
אתם יכולים גם להצטרף לשיחות הקבוצתיות החיות שלנו, בהן תוכלו לתרגל דיבור בקול רם עם לומדים אחרים ואיתי,
153
a native speaker, or with one of our other native speaker teachers.
דובר שפת אם, או עם אחד ממורי הדוברים את השפה כשפת אם האחרים שלנו.
154
And so you can start to make a habit of practicing speaking with a little bit of practice every single day,
וכך תוכלו להתחיל להפוך להרגל של תרגול דיבור עם קצת תרגול כל יום,
155
you will see an improvement.
תראה שיפור.
156
Okay, moving on to my next reason why English is so hard to learn.
אוקיי, נעבור לסיבה הבאה שלי מדוע אנגלית כל כך קשה ללמידה.
157
And that is that English has so many different ways to say the same thing
וזה שיש באנגלית כל כך הרבה דרכים שונות לומר את אותו הדבר
158
or something that's very similar or with just a little bit of nuance.
או משהו שדומה מאוד או עם קצת ניואנסים.
159
Let's take the example, I'm tired.
ניקח לדוגמה, אני עייף.
160
You could say I'm tired in English, but maybe if you're really tired, you could say I'm exhausted or I'm worn out.
אפשר להגיד באנגלית אני עייף, אבל אולי אם ממש עייף, אפשר להגיד אני מותש או אני מותש.
161
I'm beat.
אני מובס.
162
I'm drained.
אני מותש.
163
I'm wiped out.
אני נמחק.
164
I'm white.
אני לבן.
165
Okay.
בְּסֵדֶר.
166
There are so many different ways to express in English that you're tired or exactly how tired you are.
יש כל כך הרבה דרכים שונות לבטא באנגלית שאתה עייף או בדיוק כמה אתה עייף.
167
As I mentioned, my second language is German, and I've had a couple times where I've wanted to say something,
כפי שציינתי, שפתי השנייה היא גרמנית, והיו לי כמה פעמים שרציתי לומר משהו,
168
but I wanted it to have a slightly different meaning or just a little bit of nuance.
אבל רציתי שתהיה לזה משמעות קצת שונה או סתם קצת ניואנס.
169
And I came to find there's really only one German word for the situation that I wanted to describe.
וגיליתי שיש באמת רק מילה אחת בגרמנית למצב שרציתי לתאר.
170
There was only one option for me.
הייתה רק אפשרות אחת בשבילי.
171
But in English, there seemed to be so many.
אבל באנגלית, נראה שיש כל כך הרבה.
172
And this can be so tricky for non-native speakers, because if somebody says to you, God, I am starving.
וזה יכול להיות כל כך מסובך עבור דוברי שפת אם שאינם ילידיים, כי אם מישהו אומר לך, אלוהים, אני גוסס ברעב.
173
You may have only ever used or learned the word hungry to describe that you're hungry,
ייתכן שאי פעם השתמשת או למדתם את המילה "רעב" רק כדי לתאר שאתם רעבים,
174
but we have different words to choose from that have slightly different meanings
אבל יש לנו מילים שונות לבחור מהן שיש להן משמעויות מעט שונות
175
that enhance or make the word a little bit stronger in English.
שמשפרים או מחזקים מעט את המילה באנגלית.
176
Similarly, English can also be a little bit tricky because sometimes we use different language for different situations.
באופן דומה, אנגלית יכולה להיות גם קצת מסובכת כי לפעמים אנחנו משתמשים בשפה שונה עבור מצבים שונים.
177
So maybe we might use more casual language when talking with a friend
אז אולי נשתמש בשפה יותר אגבית כשאנחנו מדברים עם חבר
178
or our family and we may use slightly more polite
או המשפחה שלנו ואנחנו עשויים להשתמש בנימוס מעט יותר
179
or formal language when talking to our boss or an acquaintance
או שפה רשמית כשמדברים עם הבוס שלנו או עם מכר
180
so for example if you are at work
אז למשל אם אתה בעבודה
181
and you are speaking with a client or a customer
ואתה מדבר עם לקוח או לקוח
182
or just someone that you work with
או סתם מישהו שאת עובדת איתו
183
that you aren't super friendly with you might want to be a little bit more formal in
שאתה לא ממש ידידותי איתו, אולי כדאי לך להיות קצת יותר רשמי ב
184
that situation and let's say you need to apologize for something you might say I apologize for the inconvenience.
במצב הזה, ונניח שאתה צריך להתנצל על משהו, אתה עלול לומר שאני מתנצל על אי הנוחות.
185
But if you were with your friends you wouldn't speak like this you wouldn't say I apologize
אבל אם היית עם חברים שלך לא היית מדבר ככה, לא היית אומר סליחה
186
but you might just say I'm sorry or I'm really sorry about
אבל אתה יכול פשוט להגיד אני מצטער או אני באמת מצטער על
187
that even more casual something like my bad to express that you're sorry.
משהו אפילו יותר אגבי כמו הטעות שלי להביע שאתה מצטער.
188
All right guys so English is difficult not
בסדר חברים, אז אנגלית קשה, לא?
189
because you're bad at learning languages it's It's difficult
בגלל שאתה גרוע בלמידת שפות זה קשה
190
because learning the vocabulary and the grammar is really only one small part of mastering this language.
כי לימוד אוצר המילים והדקדוק הוא למעשה רק חלק קטן משליטה בשפה הזו.
191
You also have to learn that correct pronunciation,
אתה גם צריך ללמוד את ההגייה הנכונה,
192
connected speech, phrasal verbs, different meanings of the same word
דיבור מחובר, פעלים פראזליים, משמעויות שונות של אותה מילה
193
when they're in different contexts or they belong to a certain expression and how people use the language,
כאשר הם נמצאים בהקשרים שונים או שהם שייכים לביטוי מסוים ואיך אנשים משתמשים בשפה,
194
how people communicate in real life.
כיצד אנשים מתקשרים בחיים האמיתיים.
195
But don't be discouraged.
אבל אל תתייאשו.
196
You don't have to learn everything at once.
אתה לא חייב ללמוד הכל בבת אחת.
197
You don't need to be perfect before you can start using English.
אתה לא צריך להיות מושלם לפני שאתה יכול להתחיל להשתמש באנגלית.
198
You just need to be consistent in your learning and keep practicing, stay focused.
אתה רק צריך להיות עקבי בלמידה שלך ולהמשיך להתאמן, להישאר ממוקד.
199
Like I said, over in my community, I offer daily practice opportunities.
כמו שאמרתי, בקהילה שלי, אני מציע הזדמנויות לתרגול יומיומי.
200
So even if you take 10 to 15 minutes a day to practice your English, whether that is through my community or watching a YouTube video,
אז אפילו אם אתם מקדישים 10 עד 15 דקות ביום לתרגול האנגלית שלכם, בין אם זה דרך הקהילה שלי או צפייה בסרטון יוטיוב,
201
doing a shadowing practice, speaking with a friend over a coffee,
לעשות תרגול צללים, לדבר עם חבר על כוס קפה,
202
just make sure that you're being consistent and that it becomes a habit in your life.
רק תוודא שאתה עקבי ושהדבר יהפוך להרגל בחייך.
203
And then these things like connected speech and pronunciation and the nuance and which words to use in which context,
ואז הדברים האלה כמו דיבור והגייה מקושרים והניואנסים ואילו מילים להשתמש באיזה הקשר,
204
those things will start to come more naturally to you.
הדברים האלה יתחילו לבוא לך באופן טבעי יותר.
205
It will get easier.
זה נהיה קל יותר.
206
You will start to understand the TV shows without subtitles.
תתחיל להבין את תוכניות הטלוויזיה בלי כתוביות.
207
You'll be able to have a conversation with friends without translating in your head or second guessing yourself.
תוכל לנהל שיחה עם חברים בלי לתרגם בראש או לנחש את עצמך.
208
So I hope this video is helpful.
