Modale + have + V3
AvanzatoModal perfect
Forma e uso
must / might / should + have + V3 — supporre o giudicare un fatto passato
1.Forma
Modale + have + participio passato serve per fare ipotesi su qualcosa che è già successo o per giudicarlo. have non cambia mai: non diventa mai has o had, qualunque sia il soggetto.
| Forma | Esempio | |
|---|---|---|
| Affermativa | modale + have + V3 | She must have left. |
| Negativa | modale + not + have + V3 | He can't have seen it. |
| Domanda | modale + soggetto + have + V3? | Could they have taken the wrong road? |
| Forma passiva | modale + have been + V3 | The letter might have been lost. |
| Forma progressiva | modale + have been + V-ing | He must have been sleeping. |
Nel parlato have quasi sparisce: must've /ˈmʌstəv/, should've, could've, might've, e suona come “must of”. Quando scrivi, scrivi sempre have, e dopo have usa il participio passato (gone, seen), non il past simple (went, saw).
2.Ipotesi sul passato
Scegli il modale in base a quanto sei sicuro:
| Quanto sei sicuro | Forma | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| quasi sicuro che sia successo | must have + V3 | The lights are off. They must have gone to bed. |
| possibile, non sicuro | might / may / could have + V3 | He might have missed the bus. |
| forse no | might not / may not have + V3 | She may not have heard you. |
| quasi sicuro che non sia successo | can't / couldn't have + V3 | You can't have finished already! |

She couldn't have known about the party. We kept it secret.
Lei non poteva sapere della festa. L'abbiamo tenuta segreta.
La negativa di must have (quando fai un'ipotesi) di solito è can't have / couldn't have. Anche l'inglese americano usa spesso must not have + V3 per “sono sicuro che non è successo” (He must not have seen me), ma la forma contratta mustn't have è rara. Nota che couldn't have (impossibile) è molto più forte di might not have (forse no).
Vedi la lezione “La deduzione: must / can't”.
| Adesso | Passato | |
|---|---|---|
| sicuro | She must be at home. | She must have been at home. |
| impossibile | That can't be true. | That can't have been true. |
| possibile | He might be busy. | He might have been busy. |
| una buona idea | You should rest. | You should have rested. |
4.Should have: la cosa giusta da fare
should have + V3 = era la cosa giusta da fare (ma non è successa); shouldn't have + V3 = era sbagliato (ma è successo). Si usa per rimpianti o critiche. ought to have ha lo stesso significato ma è meno comune. should have può anche significare “ormai dovrebbe, come previsto, …”.
We should have booked a table — the place is full.
You shouldn't have said that to her.
Non avresti dovuto dirle quella cosa.
You ought to have asked before borrowing my bike.
The parcel should have arrived by now.
Il pacco ormai dovrebbe essere arrivato. (come previsto)
5.Could have, would have, needn't have
- could have + V3: era possibile, ma non è successo; serve anche per una lamentela leggera (You could have told me!).
- couldn't have + comparativo: non sarebbe potuto andare meglio / peggio.
- would have + V3: eri disposto o pronto a farlo, ma qualcosa te l'ha impedito.
