Lezione 49 · Tappa 4: Tempi verbali e modali
Il past perfect
IntermedioPast perfect
Forma e uso
Forme contratte: I'd, she'd, they'd; negativa hadn't.
| Tutti i soggetti | |
|---|---|
| Affermativa | She had left. / She'd left. |
| Negativa | She hadn't left. |
| Domanda | Had she left? |
| Risposta breve | Yes, she had. / No, she hadn't. |
'd può essere had oppure would. Guarda la parola dopo: 'd + V3 = had (I'd forgotten); 'd + forma base = would (I'd forget). E 'd better = had better.
When I got to the station, the train had already left.
I couldn't pay because I'd left my wallet at home.
2. Con by the time, before, already: concluso prima di quel momento
By the time Mum got home, we had cleaned the whole house.
The bakery had sold out of bread before I got there.
3. Esperienze fino a un momento del passato: had never / had ever … before
I'd never seen snow until I went to Sapa last winter.
Had you met him before the wedding?
Lo avevi già conosciuto prima del matrimonio?
4. Riferire pensieri o parole del passato: realised, knew, found out, said, told… (vedi la lezione “Il discorso indiretto”)
I suddenly realised I hadn't turned off the stove.
Tom said he had never eaten durian.
(le sue parole: I have never eaten…)
3.When: past simple o past perfect?
Dopo when, cambiare tempo verbale cambia l'ordine dei due eventi:
When we arrived, the party started.
Quando siamo arrivati, la festa è cominciata. (prima siamo arrivati, poi è cominciata)
When we arrived, the party had started.
When I got home, Mum cooked dinner.
When I got home, Mum had cooked dinner.
Non mettere had sull'evento successivo: When I had arrived, the meeting already started ✗ → When I arrived, the meeting had already started.
I got up, had a shower and went to work.
- Con after, before, as soon as l'ordine è già chiaro, quindi va bene anche il past simple: After I finished / After I had finished my homework, I went out.
After she had finished the report, she sent it to her manager.
(after + had V3 oppure after + past simple: vanno bene entrambi)
I'm not hungry. I've just eaten.
Non ho fame. Ho appena mangiato. (fino a ora)
I wasn't hungry. I'd just eaten.
Non avevo fame. Avevo appena mangiato. (fino a quel momento)
- had been + -ing: un'attività durata fino a un momento del passato: We had been walking for three hours when we found a café. Vedi la lezione “Past perfect continuous”.
- had been + V3 (forma passiva): When we came back, our bags had been stolen.
- had + V3 si usa anche per un passato irreale: If I had known, I would have helped (vedi la lezione “Il periodo ipotetico di terzo tipo”); I wish I had studied harder.
6.Errori comuni
When I arrived, everyone has gone home. When I arrived, everyone had gone home.
I hadn't saw him for years.I hadn't seen him for years.
had + V3.
When I had arrived, the meeting already started. When I arrived, the meeting had already started.
had + V3 va sull'evento precedente (l'inizio della riunione).
The children were tired because they had swam all afternoon. The children were tired because they had swum all afternoon.
swim – swam – swum: had + V3.
She told me she has lost her phone the day before. She told me she had lost her phone the day before.
I had been born in 2000.I was born in 2000.
