“unless / in case / as long as”
중급“Unless / in case / as long as”
unless, in case, as long as, provided that, even if — 조건을 나타내는 다른 표현
|---|---|---|
| unless | ~하지 않는 한 (= if … not) | I'll walk unless it rains. |
| in case | ~할지도 모르니까 (대비) | Take a jacket in case it gets cold. |
| as long as / so long as | ~하기만 하면 (이 조건이 충족될 때만) | You can go as long as you're back by ten. |
| provided (that) / providing (that) | ~라는 조건으로 (더 격식체) | You can park here provided you have a permit. |
| even if | ~하든 안 하든, 설령 ~하더라도 | I'll go even if it rains. |
if와 마찬가지로, 이 연결어들은 모두 미래의 일이라도 will이 아니라 현재형을 씁니다: in case it rains (in case it will rain이 아님), unless you come (unless you will come이 아님).
2.Unless = if … not
Unless we leave now, we'll be late.
(= If we don't leave now…)
I won't call you unless there's a problem.
Don't touch that unless you know what you're doing.
Do you need a coat? — Not unless it gets really cold.
I'll be upset if you don't come (unless you come이 아님).
What will you do if you don't pass?
3.In case = ~
Save the file now in case the computer crashes.
Take a photo of your passport in case you lose it.
In case는 if와 같지 않습니다.
I'll cook extra rice in case your friends come.
I'll cook extra rice if your friends come.
- just in case = 혹시 모르니까 (가능성이 더 낮을 때): I don't think we'll need it, but I'll bring a charger just in case.
I gave her my number in case she needed help.
- in case of + 명사 = ~의 경우에는 (표지판이나 안내문에 흔함): In case of fire, use the stairs.
In case you need me, I'm in my office.
4.As long as / provided (that)
As long as / so long as는 말할 때 흔히 쓰고, provided (that) / providing (that)은 더 격식 있는 말로 규칙이나 계약서에 자주 나옵니다.
You can borrow my laptop as long as you're careful with it.

I'll lend you the money, providing you pay me back next month.
As long as는 시간에 대해 “~하는 동안 내내”라는 뜻도 됩니다: You can stay as long as you like.
5.Even if = ~하든 안 하든
I'm going to the beach even if it rains.
