“Unless / in case / as long as”

นอกจาก if ภาษาอังกฤษยังมีคำเชื่อมบอกเงื่อนไขอีกหลายคำ แต่ละคำมีความหมายเฉพาะของตัวเอง

💡เหมือนกับ if คำเหล่านี้ใช้ Present เพื่อพูดถึงอนาคต ไม่ใช้ will: in case it rains (ไม่ใช่: in case it will rain), unless you come (ไม่ใช่: unless you will come)

Unless มีความหมายปฏิเสธอยู่ในตัวแล้ว (“ถ้าไม่”, “เว้นแต่”) กริยาที่ตามมาจึงมักเป็นรูปบอกเล่า

• Unless we leave now, we'll be late.

  ถ้าเราไม่ออกตอนนี้ เราจะสาย (= If we don't leave now…)

• I won't call you unless there's a problem.

  ฉันจะไม่โทรหาคุณ เว้นแต่จะมีปัญหา

• Don't touch that unless you know what you're doing.

  อย่าแตะสิ่งนั้น ถ้าคุณไม่รู้ว่ากำลังทำอะไรอยู่

• Do you need a coat? — Not unless it gets really cold.

• ใช้ unless เมื่อเงื่อนไขนั้นเป็นข้อยกเว้นเดียว ประโยค if … not บางประโยคเปลี่ยนเป็น unless ไม่ได้ โดยเฉพาะเวลาพูดถึงความรู้สึกต่อการที่บางอย่างไม่เกิดขึ้น: I'll be upset if you don't come (ไม่ใช่: unless you come)
• ประโยคคำถามปกติใช้ if ไม่ใช้ unless: What will you do if you don't pass?

In case บอกเหตุผลที่ทำบางอย่างตอนนี้: เพื่อเตรียมพร้อมสำหรับสิ่งที่อาจเกิดขึ้นทีหลัง

• Save the file now in case the computer crashes.

In case ไม่เหมือน if ลองเปรียบเทียบ:

• I'll cook extra rice in case your friends come.

คำเหล่านี้บอกเงื่อนไขที่เข้มงวด: ผลจะเกิดขึ้นก็ต่อเมื่อเงื่อนไขนี้เป็นจริงเท่านั้น As long as / so long as พบบ่อยในภาษาพูด ส่วน provided (that) / providing (that) เป็นทางการกว่า พบบ่อยในกฎระเบียบและสัญญา

• You can borrow my laptop as long as you're careful with it.

  คุณยืมแล็ปท็อปฉันได้ ตราบใดที่ใช้อย่างระมัดระวัง

• As long as you practise every day, your speaking will improve.

  ขอแค่คุณฝึกทุกวัน การพูดของคุณจะดีขึ้นแน่นอน

• Guests may use the pool provided that they shower first.

💡As long as ยังใช้บอกเวลาได้ด้วย คือ “ตลอดเวลาที่…”: You can stay as long as you like ให้อ่านทั้งประโยคเพื่อดูว่าเป็นเงื่อนไขหรือระยะเวลา

Even if บอกว่าผลยังเหมือนเดิมไม่ว่าเงื่อนไขจะเกิดหรือไม่ อย่าสับสนกับ even though ซึ่งพูดถึงข้อเท็จจริง (ดูบทเรียน “Although / though / despite”)

• I'm going to the beach even if it rains.

  ถึงฝนจะตก ฉันก็จะไปทะเล (เรายังไม่รู้ว่าฝนจะตกหรือเปล่า)

• Even if we leave now, we won't get there on time.
