“Unless / in case / as long as”

İngilizcede if dışında, koşul bildiren ve her birinin kendi anlamı olan birkaç bağlaç daha var.

💡Tıpkı if gibi, bunların hepsi gelecek için will değil present zaman alır: in case it rains (in case it will rain değil), unless you come (unless you will come değil).

Unless olumsuz anlamı zaten içinde taşır (“…mazsa”, “…madıkça”), bu yüzden arkasından gelen fiil genellikle olumludur.

• Unless we leave now, we'll be late.

  Hemen çıkmazsak geç kalacağız. (= If we don't leave now…)

• I won't call you unless there's a problem.

  Bir sorun olmadıkça seni aramam.

• Don't touch that unless you know what you're doing.

  Ne yaptığını bilmiyorsan ona dokunma.

• Do you need a coat? — Not unless it gets really cold.

  Mont lazım mı? — Hava çok soğumadıkça hayır.

• Unless, koşul tek istisna olduğunda kullanılır. Bazı if … not cümleleri unless'e çevrilemez, özellikle bir şeyin olmamasıyla ilgili duygulardan söz ederken: I'll be upset if you don't come (unless you come değil).
• Sorularda normalde unless değil if kullanılır: What will you do if you don't pass?

In case, bir şeyi şimdi yapmanın sebebini verir: daha sonra olabilecek bir şeye hazırlıklı olmak için.

• Save the file now in case the computer crashes.

  Bilgisayar çöker diye dosyayı şimdi kaydet.

• Take a photo of your passport in case you lose it.

  Kaybedersin diye pasaportunun fotoğrafını çek.

In case, if ile aynı şey değildir. Karşılaştır:

• I'll cook extra rice in case your friends come.

  Arkadaşların gelir diye fazladan pilav yapacağım. (gelseler de gelmeseler de şimdi yapıyorum)

• I'll cook extra rice if your friends come.

  Arkadaşların gelirse fazladan pilav yapacağım. (yalnızca gelirlerse yapıyorum)

• just in case = ne olur ne olmaz (daha küçük bir ihtimal için): I don't think we'll need it, but I'll bring a charger just in case.
• in case + geçmiş zaman, yaptığın bir şeyi açıklar: I gave her my number in case she needed help.
• in case of + isim = …durumunda (tabelalarda ve talimatlarda yaygın): In case of fire, use the stairs.
• Amerikan İngilizcesinde in case bazen neredeyse if gibi kullanılır: In case you need me, I'm in my office. Öğrenirken bu iki anlamı yukarıdaki gibi ayrı tut.

Bunlar sıkı bir koşul verir: sonuç yalnızca bu koşul sağlanırsa gerçekleşir. As long as / so long as konuşmada yaygındır; provided (that) / providing (that) daha resmîdir, kurallarda ve sözleşmelerde sık görülür.

• You can borrow my laptop as long as you're careful with it.

  Dikkatli kullandığın sürece laptopumu ödünç alabilirsin.

• As long as you practise every day, your speaking will improve.

  Her gün pratik yaptığın sürece konuşman gelişir.

• Guests may use the pool provided that they shower first.

  Misafirler önce duş almak şartıyla havuzu kullanabilir.

• I'll lend you the money, providing you pay me back next month.

  Gelecek ay geri ödemen şartıyla sana borç veririm.

💡As long as zamanla ilgili de olabilir, “…dığı sürece, ne kadar istersen”: You can stay as long as you like. Koşul mu yoksa süre mi olduğunu anlamak için cümlenin tamamını oku.

Even if, koşul gerçekleşse de gerçekleşmese de sonucun aynı kalacağını söyler. Onu bir gerçekten bahseden even though ile karıştırma (“Although / though / despite” dersine bak).

• I'm going to the beach even if it rains.

  Yağmur yağsa bile sahile gidiyorum. (yağmurun yağıp yağmayacağını henüz bilmiyoruz)

• Even if we leave now, we won't get there on time.

  Şimdi çıksak bile zamanında yetişemeyiz.

• Even though it was raining, we went to the beach.

  Yağmur yağmasına rağmen sahile gittik. (gerçekten yağmur yağıyordu)

• ✗Unless you don't study, you will fail the test.

  ✓Unless you study, you will fail the test. / If you don't study, you will fail the test.

  Unless olumsuzluğu zaten içinde taşır.

• ✗Bring a jacket in case it will get cold.

  ✓Bring a jacket in case it gets cold.

  Gelecek için in case'ten sonra present zaman kullan.

• ✗I won't go unless you will come with me.

  ✓I won't go unless you come with me.

  Unless'tan sonra will gelmez.

• ✗Take an umbrella in case of it rains.

  ✓Take an umbrella in case it rains. / … in case of rain.

  In case + yan cümle; in case of + isim.

• ✗Even it rains, we'll play football.

  ✓Even if it rains, we'll play football.

  Tek başına even değil, even if gerekir.

• ✗Even though it rains tomorrow, I'll go.

  ✓Even if it rains tomorrow, I'll go.

  Yağmur yağıp yağmayacağını bilmiyoruz → even if.
