“unless / in case / as long as”

إلى جانب if، في الإنجليزية أدوات ربط أخرى للشرط، ولكل منها معناها الخاص.

💡مثل if تمامًا، تأخذ كل هذه الأدوات المضارع للتعبير عن المستقبل، لا will: in case it rains (وليس in case it will rain)، unless you come (وليس unless you will come).

Unless تحمل معنى النفي في داخلها («if not»، «إلا إذا»)، لذلك يكون الفعل بعدها في العادة مثبتًا.

• Unless we leave now, we'll be late.

  إن لم نغادر الآن، فسنتأخر. (= If we don't leave now…)

• I won't call you unless there's a problem.

  لن أتصل بك إلا إذا حدثت مشكلة.

• Don't touch that unless you know what you're doing.

  لا تلمس ذلك إلا إذا كنت تعرف ما تفعله.

• Do you need a coat? — Not unless it gets really cold.

  هل تحتاج إلى معطف؟ — لا، إلا إذا صار الجو باردًا جدًا.

• تُستخدم unless عندما يكون الشرط هو الاستثناء الوحيد. وبعض جمل if … not لا يمكن تحويلها إلى unless، وخاصة عندما تعبّر عن مشاعرك تجاه أمر لم يحدث: I'll be upset if you don't come (وليس unless you come).
• تستخدم الأسئلة عادةً if لا unless: What will you do if you don't pass?

تذكر In case سبب فعل شيء الآن: لتكون مستعدًا لأمر قد يحدث لاحقًا.

• Save the file now in case the computer crashes.

  احفظ الملف الآن تحسّبًا لتعطّل الحاسوب.

• Take a photo of your passport in case you lose it.

  التقط صورة لجواز سفرك تحسّبًا لضياعه.

In case ليست مثل if. قارن:

• I'll cook extra rice in case your friends come.

  سأطبخ أرزًا إضافيًا تحسّبًا لمجيء أصدقائك. (أطبخ الآن، سواء جاؤوا أم لا)

• I'll cook extra rice if your friends come.

  سأطبخ أرزًا إضافيًا إذا جاء أصدقاؤك. (أطبخ فقط إذا جاؤوا)

• just in case = لاحتمال أضعف: I don't think we'll need it, but I'll bring a charger just in case.
• in case + الماضي تشرح شيئًا فعلته: I gave her my number in case she needed help.
• in case of + اسم = في حال وجود (شائعة في اللافتات والتعليمات): In case of fire, use the stairs.
• في الإنجليزية الأمريكية تُستخدم in case أحيانًا بمعنى قريب من if: In case you need me, I'm in my office. أثناء التعلم، أبقِ المعنيين منفصلين كما في الأعلى.

تعبّر هذه عن شرط صارم: لا تتحقق النتيجة إلا إذا تحقق هذا الشرط. As long as / so long as شائعتان في الكلام؛ أما provided (that) / providing (that) فأكثر رسمية وتشيع في القوانين والعقود.

• You can borrow my laptop as long as you're careful with it.

  يمكنك استعارة حاسوبي المحمول ما دمت ستعتني به.

• As long as you practise every day, your speaking will improve.

  ما دمت تتدرب كل يوم، فستتحسن مهارة التحدث لديك.

• Guests may use the pool provided that they shower first.

  يجوز للنزلاء استخدام المسبح شريطة أن يستحمّوا أولًا.

• I'll lend you the money, providing you pay me back next month.

  سأقرضك المال، على أن تردّه لي الشهر القادم.

💡يمكن أن تتعلق As long as بالزمن أيضًا، بمعنى «طوال المدة التي»: You can stay as long as you like. اقرأ الجملة كلها لتعرف هل هي شرط أم مدة زمنية.

تعني Even if أن النتيجة تبقى كما هي سواء تحقق الشرط أم لم يتحقق. لا تخلط بينها وبين even though التي تتحدث عن حقيقة (انظر درس «Although / though / despite»).

• I'm going to the beach even if it rains.

  سأذهب إلى الشاطئ حتى لو أمطرت. (لا نعرف بعد هل ستمطر)

• Even if we leave now, we won't get there on time.

  حتى لو غادرنا الآن، فلن نصل في الوقت المحدد.

• Even though it was raining, we went to the beach.

  مع أنها كانت تمطر، ذهبنا إلى الشاطئ. (كانت تمطر فعلًا)

• ✗Unless you don't study, you will fail the test.

  ✓Unless you study, you will fail the test. / If you don't study, you will fail the test.

  Unless تحمل معنى النفي في داخلها.

• ✗Bring a jacket in case it will get cold.

  ✓Bring a jacket in case it gets cold.

  استخدم المضارع بعد in case للتعبير عن المستقبل.

• ✗I won't go unless you will come with me.

  ✓I won't go unless you come with me.

  لا تأتي will بعد unless.

• ✗Take an umbrella in case of it rains.

  ✓Take an umbrella in case it rains. / … in case of rain.

  In case + جملة؛ in case of + اسم.

• ✗Even it rains, we'll play football.

  ✓Even if it rains, we'll play football.

  تحتاج إلى even if، لا إلى even وحدها.

• ✗Even though it rains tomorrow, I'll go.

  ✓Even if it rains tomorrow, I'll go.

  لا نعرف هل ستمطر → even if.
