unless, in case, as long as, provided that, even if — 条件を表すほかの言い方
1.全体像
英語には if のほかにも、条件を表すつなぎの語がいくつかあり、それぞれ意味が違います。

| even if | たとえ〜でも（そうなってもならなくても） | I'll go even if it rains. |
if と同じく、これらはすべて未来のことでも will ではなく現在形を使います：in case it rains（in case it will rain ではない）、unless you come（unless you will come ではない）。
2.Unless = if … not
Unless にはすでに否定の意味（「〜しなければ」「〜でない限り」）が含まれているので、後ろの動詞はふつう肯定形です。
Unless we leave now, we'll be late.
今すぐ出ないと遅れてしまいます。（= If we don't leave now…）
I won't call you unless there's a problem.
何か問題がない限り、電話はしません。
Don't touch that unless you know what you're doing.
やり方がわかっていないなら、それには触らないで。
Do you need a coat? — Not unless it gets really cold.
コートはいる？ — すごく寒くならない限り、いらないよ。
- Unless は、その条件が唯一の例外であるときに使います。if … not の文がすべて unless に書き換えられるわけではなく、特に何かが起こらないことへの気持ちを言うときは書き換えられません：I'll be upset if you don't come（unless you come ではない）。
- 疑問文では、ふつう unless ではなく if を使います：What will you do if you don't pass?
3.In case =「〜するといけないので」
In case は、今何かをする理由を表します。後で起こるかもしれないことに備えるためです。
Save the file now in case the computer crashes.
パソコンが固まるといけないので、今ファイルを保存しておいて。
Take a photo of your passport in case you lose it.
なくしたときのために、パスポートの写真を撮っておきましょう。
In case は if と同じではありません。比べてみましょう：
I'll cook extra rice in case your friends come.
友だちが来るかもしれないから、ご飯を多めに炊いておくね。（来ても来なくても、今炊く）
I'll cook extra rice if your friends come.
友だちが来たら、ご飯を多めに炊くね。（来た場合だけ炊く）
- just in case =「念のため」（可能性がより低いとき）：I don't think we'll need it, but I'll bring a charger just in case.
- in case + 過去形 は、自分がしたことの理由を説明します：I gave her my number in case she needed help.
- in case of + 名詞 =「〜の場合は」（掲示や説明書でよく使う）：In case of fire, use the stairs.
- アメリカ英語では、in case が if とほぼ同じ意味で使われることもあります：In case you need me, I'm in my office. 学ぶうちは、上のように2つの意味を分けて覚えておきましょう。
4.As long as / provided (that)
これらは厳しい条件を表します。この条件が満たされたときにだけ、結果が起こります。As long as / so long as は話し言葉でよく使い、provided (that) / providing (that) はより改まった言い方で、規則や契約書でよく使われます。
You can borrow my laptop as long as you're careful with it.
大事に使ってくれるなら、ノートパソコンを貸してあげるよ。
As long as you practise every day, your speaking will improve.
毎日練習しさえすれば、スピーキングは上達します。
Guests may use the pool provided that they shower first.
宿泊客の方は、先にシャワーを浴びることを条件にプールをご利用いただけます。
I'll lend you the money, providing you pay me back next month.
来月返してくれるなら、お金を貸しますよ。
As long as は時間について「〜する間ずっと」という意味にもなります：You can stay as long as you like. 条件なのか時間の長さなのかは、文全体を読んで判断しましょう。
5.Even if =「たとえ〜でも」
Even if は、条件が起こっても起こらなくても結果は変わらないことを表します。事実について言う even though と混同しないようにしましょう（レッスン「Although / though / despite」を参照）。
I'm going to the beach even if it rains.
たとえ雨が降っても、私は海に行きます。（雨が降るかどうかはまだわからない）
Even if we leave now, we won't get there on time.
たとえ今出発しても、時間には間に合いません。
Even though it was raining, we went to the beach.
雨が降っていたけれど、私たちは海に行きました。（実際に雨が降っていた）
6.よくある間違い
Unless you don't study, you will fail the test.Unless you study, you will fail the test. / If you don't study, you will fail the test.
unless にはすでに否定の意味が含まれています。
Bring a jacket in case it will get cold.Bring a jacket in case it gets cold.
未来のことでも、in case の後ろは現在形にします。
I won't go unless you will come with me.I won't go unless you come with me.
unless の後ろに will は使いません。
Take an umbrella in case of it rains.Take an umbrella in case it rains. / … in case of rain.
in case + 節、in case of + 名詞。
Even it rains, we'll play football.Even if it rains, we'll play football.
even だけではなく、even if が必要です。
Even though it rains tomorrow, I'll go.Even if it rains tomorrow, I'll go.
雨が降るかどうかわからない → even if。
例文
- You can't come in unless you have a ticket.
- Unless you hurry, you'll miss the bus.
- We'll have the party in the garden unless it rains.
- Take an umbrella in case it rains later.
