By와 until
중급By vs until
by + 시점 (늦어도 ~까지), until + 시점 (~까지 계속), by the time…
|---|---|---|---|
| by + 시간 | 늦어도 ~까지 (마감) | 끝내기만 하면 되는 동작 | Please reply by Friday. |
마감 → by.
2.By — 마감
I need the report by Friday.
Dinner will be ready by seven.
The parcel should arrive by the end of the week.
2. by then / by that time / by now
Call me at nine. I'll be home by then.
They left at noon, so they should be in Da Lat by now.
By next summer, I'll have saved enough for a motorbike.
By 2020, she'd moved to Saigon.
Till = until이며 말할 때 흔히 씁니다.
The shop is open until 10 pm.
Let's wait here until the rain stops.
I work from nine till five.
2. not … until = ~
I didn't get home until midnight.
The film doesn't start until eight.
Stay here until I come back.
(until I will come back이 아님)
I'm not leaving until I've finished this chapter.
4.By the time + 절
By the time + 절 = “이 일이 일어날 때쯤에는 다른 일이 이미 일어나 있다”.
|---|---|---|
| 과거 | By the time + 과거형, … had + 과거분사 | By the time we got to the cinema, the film had started. |
| 미래 | By the time + 현재형, … will have + 과거분사 | By the time you get here, I'll have finished. |

By the time you read this, I'll be on the plane.
(By the time you will read가 아님)
이 뜻으로 “until the time”이라고 하지 마세요. 해 있었다”라는 뜻에는 항상 by the time을 씁니다.
You can stay until Sunday.
You have to leave by Sunday.

We stayed at the party by midnight. We stayed at the party until midnight.

굳어진 표현: by the time.
By the time you will arrive, we'll have eaten.By the time you arrive, we'll have eaten.
미래의 일이라도 by the time 뒤에는 현재형을 씁니다.
By the time we arrived, the shop closed.By the time we arrived, the shop had closed.
