Lição 109 · Etapa 9: Ligando ideias

By ou until

Intermédio

By vs until

Forma e uso

by + momento (no máximo até), until + momento (o tempo todo até), by the time…

1.A diferença básica

SignificadoUsado comExemplo

Continua → until. Prazo → by.

2.By — um prazo

1. by + tempo = naquele momento ou antes dele

  • I need the report by Friday.

Preciso do relatório até sexta, no máximo.

  • Dinner will be ready by seven.

O jantar vai estar pronto até as sete.

  • The parcel should arrive by the end of the week.

2. by then / by that time / by now

  • Call me at nine. I'll be home by then.

Me liga às nove. Até lá eu já vou estar em casa.

  • They left at noon, so they should be in Da Lat by now.

3. Muitas vezes usado com tempos perfect (veja a lição “Future perfect”)

  • By next summer, I'll have saved enough for a motorbike.

  • By 2020, she'd moved to Saigon.

  • The shop is open until 10 pm.

A loja fica aberta até as 22h.

  • Let's wait here until the rain stops.

Vamos esperar aqui até a chuva parar.

  • I work from nine till five.

  • I didn't get home until midnight.

Só cheguei em casa à meia-noite.

  • The film doesn't start until eight.

  • Stay here until I come back.

Fique aqui até eu voltar. (não: until I will come back)

  • I'm not leaving until I've finished this chapter.

4.By the time + oração

By the time + oração = “quando isso acontece, a outra coisa já aconteceu”. A oração principal muitas vezes usa um tempo perfect, porque aquela ação vem antes do momento.

TempoEstruturaExemplo
PassadoBy the time + passado simples, … had + V3By the time we got to the cinema, the film had started.
FuturoBy the time + presente simples, … will have + V3By the time you get here, I'll have finished.

  • By the time you read this, I'll be on the plane.

(não: By the time you will read)

Não diga “until the time” com esse sentido. Para “quando …, algo já tinha acontecido”, use sempre by the time.

5.By e until lado a lado

Você pode ficar até domingo. (você fica o tempo todo até domingo)

  • You have to leave by Sunday.
