Lección 109 · Etapa 9: Conectar ideas
By o until
IntermedioBy vs until
Forma y uso
|---|---|---|---|
| by + momento | no más tarde de (un plazo) | una acción que solo hay que hacer | Please reply by Friday. |
2.By: un plazo
1. by + momento = en ese momento o antes
I need the report by Friday.
Necesito el informe para el viernes.
Dinner will be ready by seven.
La cena estará lista para las siete.
The parcel should arrive by the end of the week.
2. by then / by that time / by now
Call me at nine. I'll be home by then.
Llámame a las nueve. Para entonces ya estaré en casa.
They left at noon, so they should be in Da Lat by now.
By next summer, I'll have saved enough for a motorbike.
By 2020, she'd moved to Saigon.
Para 2020, ya se había mudado a Saigón.
3.Until: continúa hasta
The shop is open until 10 pm.
Let's wait here until the rain stops.
Esperemos aquí hasta que pare de llover.
I work from nine till five.
I didn't get home until midnight.
No llegué a casa hasta medianoche.
The film doesn't start until eight.
La película no empieza hasta las ocho.
3. until + oración: presente para el futuro (no will)
Stay here until I come back.
Quédate aquí hasta que vuelva. (no: until I will come back)
I'm not leaving until I've finished this chapter.
4.By the time + oración
| Tiempo | Estructura | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| Pasado | By the time + pasado simple, … had + V3 | By the time we got to the cinema, the film had started. |
| Futuro | By the time + presente simple, … will have + V3 | By the time you get here, I'll have finished. |
By the time I found my keys, the bus had already left.
By the time you read this, I'll be on the plane.
(no: By the time you will read)
No digas “until the time” con este sentido. Para “cuando …, algo ya había pasado”, usa siempre by the time.
You can stay until Sunday.
You have to leave by Sunday.
I'll be at work until six, so I'll be home by half past six.
I can't finish it by Friday.
No puedo terminarlo para el viernes. (no llegaré al plazo)
I won't finish it until Friday.
No lo terminaré hasta el viernes. (estará listo el viernes, no antes)
6.Errores frecuentes
I have to finish this essay until Monday.I have to finish this essay by Monday.
Plazo para terminar → by.
We stayed at the party by midnight. We stayed at the party until midnight.
Quedarse continúa hasta ese momento → until.
Until the time I got to the station, the train had left.By the time I got to the station, the train had left.
Expresión fija: by the time.
By the time you will arrive, we'll have eaten.By the time you arrive, we'll have eaten.
Después de by the time, usa el presente para el futuro.
By the time we arrived, the shop closed.By the time we arrived, the shop had closed.
La acción anterior → pasado perfecto.
