1.मूल फ़र्क
दोनों समय के किसी बिंदु के साथ आते हैं, लेकिन उसे दो अलग नज़रियों से देखते हैं।

खुद से पूछें: क्या काम उस समय तक लगातार चलता रहता है, या उसे बस उससे पहले पूरा होना है? लगातार चलता है → until। डेडलाइन → by।
2.By — डेडलाइन
1. by + समय = उस समय पर या उससे पहले
I need the report by Friday.
मुझे शुक्रवार तक रिपोर्ट चाहिए।
Dinner will be ready by seven.
सात बजे तक खाना तैयार हो जाएगा।
The parcel should arrive by the end of the week.
पार्सल हफ़्ते के आख़िर तक पहुँच जाना चाहिए।
2. by then / by that time / by now
Call me at nine. I'll be home by then.
मुझे नौ बजे फ़ोन करना। तब तक मैं घर पहुँच जाऊँगा।
They left at noon, so they should be in Da Lat by now.
वे दोपहर को निकले थे, तो अब तक दा लाट पहुँच गए होंगे।
3. अक्सर perfect tenses के साथ (पाठ “Future perfect” देखें)
By next summer, I'll have saved enough for a motorbike.
अगली गर्मियों तक मैं एक मोटरसाइकिल के लिए काफ़ी पैसे बचा चुका होऊँगा।
By 2020, she'd moved to Saigon.
2020 तक वह साइगॉन जा चुकी थी।
3.Until — तब तक लगातार
1. कोई स्थिति किसी समय तक चलती रहती है, फिर रुक जाती है। Till = until, बोलचाल में आम।
The shop is open until 10 pm.
दुकान रात 10 बजे तक खुली रहती है।
Let's wait here until the rain stops.
चलो, बारिश रुकने तक यहीं इंतज़ार करते हैं।
I work from nine till five.
मैं नौ से पाँच बजे तक काम करता हूँ।
2. not … until = उससे पहले नहीं (उम्मीद से देर से)
I didn't get home until midnight.
मैं आधी रात से पहले घर नहीं पहुँचा।
The film doesn't start until eight.
फ़िल्म आठ बजे से पहले शुरू नहीं होती।
3. until + उपवाक्य: भविष्य के लिए present tense (will नहीं)
Stay here until I come back.
मेरे वापस आने तक यहीं रहना। (until I will come back नहीं)
I'm not leaving until I've finished this chapter.
जब तक मैं यह अध्याय पूरा नहीं कर लेता, मैं नहीं जाऊँगा।
4.By the time + उपवाक्य
By the time + उपवाक्य = “जब तक यह होता है, तब तक दूसरी बात पहले ही हो चुकी होती है”। मुख्य उपवाक्य में अक्सर perfect tense आता है, क्योंकि वह काम उस समय से पहले होता है।

जब तक आप यह पढ़ेंगे, मैं हवाई जहाज़ में होऊँगा। (By the time you will read नहीं)
इस मतलब में “until the time” न कहें। “जब तक …, तब तक कुछ पहले ही हो चुका था” कहने के लिए हमेशा by the time लगाएँ।
5.By और until आमने-सामने
You can stay until Sunday.
आप रविवार तक रुक सकते हैं। (आप रविवार तक पूरे समय रुकते हैं)
You have to leave by Sunday.
आपको रविवार तक निकल जाना होगा। (आप रविवार को या उससे पहले निकलते हैं)
I'll be at work until six, so I'll be home by half past six.
मैं छह बजे तक ऑफ़िस में रहूँगा, इसलिए साढ़े छह बजे तक घर पहुँच जाऊँगा।
I can't finish it by Friday.
मैं इसे शुक्रवार तक पूरा नहीं कर सकता। (मेरी डेडलाइन छूट जाएगी)
I won't finish it until Friday.
मैं इसे शुक्रवार से पहले पूरा नहीं कर पाऊँगा। (यह शुक्रवार को पूरा होगा, उससे पहले नहीं)
6.आम गलतियाँ
I have to finish this essay until Monday.I have to finish this essay by Monday.
पूरा करने की डेडलाइन → by।
We stayed at the party by midnight.We stayed at the party until midnight.
रुकना उस समय तक लगातार चलता है → until।
Until the time I got to the station, the train had left.By the time I got to the station, the train had left.
तय वाक्यांश: by the time।
By the time you will arrive, we'll have eaten.By the time you arrive, we'll have eaten.
भविष्य के लिए by the time के बाद present लगाएँ।
By the time we arrived, the shop closed.By the time we arrived, the shop had closed.
पहले वाला काम → Past Perfect।
