During और while

During और while दोनों बताते हैं कि कोई बात किसी दूसरी चीज़ के समय में होती है। फ़र्क इसमें है कि बाद में क्या आता है: during + संज्ञा, while + उपवाक्य (कर्ता + क्रिया)। For एक अलग सवाल का जवाब देता है: कितनी देर।

💡कई भाषाओं में दोनों के लिए एक ही शब्द होता है। झटपट जाँच: क्या खाली जगह के बाद कर्ता + क्रिया है? हाँ → while। सिर्फ़ संज्ञा → during।

1. किसी अवधि या घटना के दौरान किसी समय कुछ होना

• My phone rang twice during the meeting.

  मीटिंग के दौरान मेरा फ़ोन दो बार बजा।

• Someone knocked on the door during the night.

  रात में किसी ने दरवाज़ा खटखटाया।

2. पूरी अवधि में

• Most shops in our street close during Tet.

  टेट के दौरान हमारी गली की ज़्यादातर दुकानें बंद रहती हैं।

• Nobody said a word during the whole trip.

  पूरे सफ़र के दौरान किसी ने एक शब्द नहीं कहा।

आम प्रयोग: during the day / the night / the summer / the week / the war / the 1990s / my stay / the lesson / the meal।

1. एक ही समय पर हो रही दो बातें

• Linh listens to podcasts while she cooks.

  लिन्ह खाना बनाते समय पॉडकास्ट सुनती है।

• Could you hold my coffee while I find my keys?

  जब तक मैं अपनी चाबियाँ ढूँढूँ, क्या आप मेरी कॉफ़ी पकड़ेंगे?

2. कोई छोटी घटना किसी लंबी घटना को बीच में रोकती है — लंबी घटना आमतौर पर Past Continuous में होती है (पाठ “Past continuous” देखें)

• Someone stole my bag while I was waiting for the train.

  जब मैं ट्रेन का इंतज़ार कर रहा था, तब किसी ने मेरा बैग चुरा लिया।

• While we were having dinner, the power went out.

  जब हम खाना खा रहे थे, तभी बिजली चली गई।

3. भविष्य की बात: while + present tense (will नहीं)

• Can you water my plants while I'm away?

  जब मैं बाहर रहूँ, तब क्या आप मेरे पौधों को पानी दे देंगे? (while I will be away नहीं)

• I'll do the shopping while you're at the dentist.

  जब तक आप डेंटिस्ट के पास होंगे, मैं ख़रीदारी कर लूँगा।

4. छोटा रूप: while + -ing (जब दोनों हिस्सों का कर्ता एक ही हो)

• Please don't use your phone while driving.

  कृपया गाड़ी चलाते समय फ़ोन का इस्तेमाल न करें।

• She hurt her back while lifting a heavy box.

  एक भारी डिब्बा उठाते समय उसकी पीठ में चोट लग गई।

💡While का एक दूसरा मतलब भी है, “जबकि / दूसरी ओर”, जो दो चीज़ों में अंतर दिखाने के लिए आता है: My brother loves football, while I prefer badminton। इस मतलब का समय से कोई लेना-देना नहीं है।

For + समय की अवधि बताता है कि कोई चीज़ कितनी देर चलती है। During + कोई अवधि या घटना बताता है कि वह कब होती है। अवधि नापने के लिए during का प्रयोग न करें: “I waited during two hours” नहीं।

• We went to Phu Quoc for five days during the summer holidays.

  गर्मी की छुट्टियों में हम पाँच दिन के लिए फ़ू क्वोक गए। (for = कितनी देर, during = कब)

• It rained for three hours during the night.

  रात में तीन घंटे तक बारिश हुई।

• I learned to cook while I was living in Osaka.

  जब मैं ओसाका में रह रहा था, तब मैंने खाना बनाना सीखा। (while + उपवाक्य)

• I learned to cook during my time in Osaka.

  ओसाका में रहने के दौरान मैंने खाना बनाना सीखा। (during + संज्ञा)

💡During the last two weeks सही है: “the last two weeks” एक तय अवधि है, “कितनी देर?” का जवाब नहीं। अवधि बताने के लिए for लगाएँ: I've been sick for two weeks।

• ✗During I was cooking, I burnt my hand.

  ✓While I was cooking, I burnt my hand.

  बाद में उपवाक्य आता है → while।

• ✗I fell asleep while the film.

  ✓I fell asleep during the film.

  बाद में सिर्फ़ संज्ञा आती है → during।

• ✗I lived in Da Nang during five years.

  ✓I lived in Da Nang for five years.

  समय की अवधि → for।

• ✗I'll call you while I will be in Hanoi.

  ✓I'll call you while I'm in Hanoi.

  भविष्य के लिए while के बाद present लगाएँ।

• ✗Don't talk during eating.

  ✓Don't talk while eating.

  -ing वाले काम के साथ while लगाएँ।
