During o while
IntermedioDuring vs while
Forma e uso
during + nome, while + frase — durante, mentre
1.Forma
During e while dicono entrambi che qualcosa succede nel tempo di qualcos'altro. La differenza è cosa viene dopo: during + nome, while + frase (soggetto + verbo). For risponde a un'altra domanda: per quanto tempo.
| Parola | Seguito da | Risponde a | Esempio |
|---|---|---|---|
| during | nome (the film, the night, my holiday) | Quando? | I fell asleep during the film. |
| while | frase (soggetto + verbo) | Quando? | I fell asleep while I was watching the film. |
| for | durata (two hours, three days) | Per quanto tempo? | I slept for two hours. |
Funziona come in italiano: during = “durante” (+ nome), while = “mentre” (+ frase). Controllo veloce: dopo lo spazio c'è soggetto + verbo? Sì → while. Solo un nome → during.
2.During + nome
My phone rang twice during the meeting.
Someone knocked on the door during the night.
2. Per tutto il periodo
Most shops in our street close during Tet.
Nobody said a word during the whole trip.
Espressioni comuni: during the day / the night / the summer / the week / the war / the 1990s / my stay / the lesson / the meal.
3.While + frase
1. Due cose che succedono nello stesso momento
Linh listens to podcasts while she cooks.

Someone stole my bag while I was waiting for the train.
While we were having dinner, the power went out.
Mentre stavamo cenando, è andata via la luce.

She hurt her back while lifting a heavy box.
4.For o during?
We went to Phu Quoc for five days during the summer holidays.
(for = per quanto tempo, during = quando)

During the last two weeks è corretto: “the last two weeks” è un periodo preciso, non una risposta a “per quanto tempo?”. Per indicare la durata usa for: I've been sick for two weeks.
5.Errori comuni
