“As if / as though”

Intermedio

Forma e uso

as if / as though + frase — come se

1.Forma

As if e as though significano la stessa cosa: “come se”.

StrutturaEsempio
look / sound / feel / smell / taste + as if + fraseYou look as if you need a coffee.
It looks / sounds / seems / feels + as if + fraseIt sounds as if they're having a party.
verbo d'azione + as if + fraseHe talks as if he knows everything.
as if + to-infinito / -ing (forma breve)She nodded as if to say yes.
like + frase (parlato informale)It looks like it's going to rain.

2.Quando si usa

  • You look as if you haven't slept at all.

  • This bread smells as though it's just come out of the oven.

  • My legs feel as if they're made of stone.

2. It looks / sounds / seems as if…: ipotizzare cosa sta succedendo

  • It looks as if the shop is closed today.

Sembra che oggi il negozio sia chiuso.

  • It seems as though nobody read my email.

  • Mai walked past me as though she didn't know me.

  • He's eating as if he hasn't eaten for days.

Mangia come se non mangiasse da giorni.

4. Forme brevi: as if + to-infinito / -ing

  • He opened his mouth as if to say something, then stopped.

  • She kept looking at the door as if expecting someone.

Continuava a guardare la porta, come se aspettasse qualcuno.

5. It's not as if… = non è che… (per scartare un motivo)

  • Take your time. It's not as if we're in a hurry.

Fai con calma. Non è che abbiamo fretta.

3.Reale o irreale: che tempo usare dopo as if

SituazioneTempo dopo as ifEsempio
può essere vero, adessopresenteHe looks as if he's ill.
può essere vero, è appena successopresent perfectYou look as if you've just woken up.
non è vero, adessopast simple (were / was)He talks as if he were the boss.
verbo principale al passatotempo spostato indietro: passato / past perfectHe looked as if he hadn't slept.
  • She talks about London as if she lived there, but she's never been.

  • My grandpa dances as if he were twenty again.

  • The kitchen looked as though a storm had passed through it.

  • Were o was? Dopo as if, were per tutti i soggetti suona più formale; was è molto comune nel parlato. Sono corretti tutti e due.
  • Spostare il tempo indietro non è obbligatorio: anche He talks as if he owns the place è corretto e molto naturale, pur non essendo vero.

Molti studenti tengono lo stesso tempo dappertutto. Quando il verbo principale è al passato (looked, seemed, acted…), ricordati di spostare il tempo indietro dopo as if: He looked as if he had been crying (non: has been crying), un po' come in italiano “sembrava che avesse pianto”.

4.As if, like o as?

Seguito daSi usaEsempio
nome / pronomelikeThat cloud looks like a rabbit.
fraseas if / as though (informale: like)It looks as if it's going to snow.
un ruolo o un lavoro realeasShe works as a nurse.

As da solo non significa “come se”, e non mettere insieme like e as if. Nel parlato like + frase al posto di as if è molto comune (He acts like he owns the place), ma nello scritto formale usa as if. Vedi anche la lezione “Like o as”.

“As if!” da solo è un'esclamazione informale che significa “Figurati! Non succederà mai”: Do you think he'll say sorry? — As if!

5.Errori comuni

  • He talks like as if he knows everything.

He talks as if he knows everything.

Non mettere insieme like e as if.

  • It looks as it's going to rain.

It looks as if it's going to rain.

As da solo non significa “come se”.

  • She looks as if a model.

    She looks like a model.

Davanti a un nome usa like; as if ha bisogno di una frase.

  • He looked as if he has been crying.

He looked as if he had been crying.

  • My cat acts as if he be the king of the house.

My cat acts as if he were the king of the house.

As if ha bisogno di una forma verbale completa (were / was / is).

  • He raised his hand as if ask a question.

He raised his hand as if to ask a question.

Forma breve: as if + to-infinito.

Esempi

  • This soup tastes as if someone has put a whole bag of salt in it.
  • It feels as if this summer will never end.
