as if / as though + 절 — 마치 ~인 것처럼
1.형태
As if와 as though는 뜻이 같습니다: “마치 ~인 것처럼”. 뒤에 완전한 절(주어 + 동사)이 옵니다. as though가 조금 더 격식 있게 들립니다.

2.언제 쓰나요
1. 사람이나 사물이 어떻게 보이는지, 들리는지, 느껴지는지 말할 때 — 보거나 들은 것을 근거로
You look as if you haven't slept at all.
한숨도 못 잔 것 같은 얼굴이네요.
This bread smells as though it's just come out of the oven.
이 빵은 막 오븐에서 나온 것 같은 냄새가 나요.
My legs feel as if they're made of stone.
다리가 돌로 된 것처럼 무거워요.
2. It looks / sounds / seems as if… — 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 추측할 때
It looks as if the shop is closed today.
오늘 가게가 문을 닫은 것 같아요.
It seems as though nobody read my email.
아무도 제 이메일을 안 읽은 것 같아요.
3. 누군가가 어떤 식으로 행동하는지 묘사할 때
Mai walked past me as though she didn't know me.
마이는 마치 저를 모르는 것처럼 지나쳐 갔어요.
He's eating as if he hasn't eaten for days.
그는 며칠 굶은 사람처럼 먹고 있어요.
4. 축약형: as if + to부정사 / -ing
He opened his mouth as if to say something, then stopped.
그는 뭔가 말하려는 듯 입을 열었다가 그만두었어요.
She kept looking at the door as if expecting someone.
그녀는 누군가를 기다리는 듯 계속 문 쪽을 바라봤어요.
5. It's not as if… = ~인 것도 아니잖아 (이유를 대수롭지 않게 넘김)
Take your time. It's not as if we're in a hurry.
천천히 해. 우리가 바쁜 것도 아니잖아.
3.사실일까 아닐까: as if 뒤의 시제
as if 뒤의 내용이 사실일 수도 있으면 실제 시간에 맞는 보통 시제를 씁니다. 분명히 사실이 아니면, 사실이 아님을 보여 주기 위해 시제를 한 단계 과거로 옮길 수 있습니다(가정법 과거나 wish와 같은 원리).

그녀는 런던에 사는 것처럼 런던 얘기를 하지만, 한 번도 가 본 적이 없어요. (사실이 아님 → 과거형)
My grandpa dances as if he were twenty again.
할아버지는 다시 스무 살이 된 것처럼 춤을 추세요.
The kitchen looked as though a storm had passed through it.
부엌은 마치 폭풍이 휩쓸고 간 것 같았어요. (주절이 과거, 그보다 먼저 일어난 일 → had + 과거분사)
- Were일까 was일까? as if 뒤에서 모든 주어에 were를 쓰면 더 격식 있게 들리고, 말할 때는 was도 아주 흔합니다. 둘 다 맞습니다.
- 시제를 옮기는 것이 필수는 아닙니다: He talks as if he owns the place도 맞고, 사실이 아니더라도 아주 자연스러운 표현입니다.
많은 학습자가 어디서나 같은 시제를 그대로 씁니다. 주절 동사가 과거(looked, seemed, acted…)라면 as if 뒤의 시제도 과거로 옮기는 것을 잊지 마세요: He looked as if he had been crying (has been crying이 아님).
4.As if, like, as 중 무엇?

As만으로는 “마치 ~처럼”이라는 뜻이 되지 않으며, like와 as if를 함께 쓰지도 않습니다. 말할 때는 as if 대신 like + 절이 아주 흔하지만(He acts like he owns the place), 격식 있는 글에서는 as if를 쓰세요. 「Like와 as」 레슨도 참고하세요.
“As if!”만 단독으로 쓰면 “말도 안 돼, 그럴 리가 없어”라는 뜻의 구어체 감탄 표현입니다: Do you think he'll say sorry? — As if!
5.자주 하는 실수
