as if / as though + उपवाक्य — जैसे कि, मानो
1.रूप (Form)
As if और as though का मतलब एक ही है: “ऐसे, मानो…”। इनके बाद पूरा उपवाक्य (कर्ता + क्रिया) आता है। As though थोड़ा ज़्यादा औपचारिक लगता है।

2.इसका प्रयोग कब करें
1. कोई व्यक्ति या चीज़ कैसी दिखती, सुनाई देती या महसूस होती है — जो आप देख या सुन रहे हैं, उसके आधार पर
You look as if you haven't slept at all.
आप ऐसे लग रहे हैं मानो बिल्कुल सोए ही नहीं।
This bread smells as though it's just come out of the oven.
इस ब्रेड की ख़ुशबू ऐसी है मानो यह अभी-अभी ओवन से निकली हो।
My legs feel as if they're made of stone.
मेरे पैर ऐसे लग रहे हैं मानो पत्थर के बने हों।
2. It looks / sounds / seems as if… — क्या हो रहा है, उसका अंदाज़ा लगाना
It looks as if the shop is closed today.
लगता है आज दुकान बंद है।
It seems as though nobody read my email.
ऐसा लगता है कि किसी ने मेरा ईमेल नहीं पढ़ा।
3. कोई व्यक्ति कोई काम किस तरह करता है, उसका वर्णन
Mai walked past me as though she didn't know me.
माई मेरे पास से ऐसे गुज़री मानो मुझे जानती ही न हो।
He's eating as if he hasn't eaten for days.
वह ऐसे खा रहा है मानो कई दिनों से भूखा हो।
4. छोटे रूप: as if + to-infinitive / -ing
He opened his mouth as if to say something, then stopped.
उसने ऐसे मुँह खोला मानो कुछ कहने वाला हो, फिर रुक गया।
She kept looking at the door as if expecting someone.
वह बार-बार दरवाज़े की ओर देखती रही, मानो किसी का इंतज़ार कर रही हो।
5. It's not as if… = ऐसा तो है नहीं कि… (किसी कारण को हल्के में टालना)
Take your time. It's not as if we're in a hurry.
आराम से करो। ऐसा तो है नहीं कि हमें कोई जल्दी है।
3.सच या कल्पना: as if के बाद कौन-सा tense
अगर as if के बाद वाली बात सच हो सकती है, तो असली समय के हिसाब से सामान्य tense लगाएँ। अगर वह साफ़ तौर पर सच नहीं है, तो यह दिखाने के लिए कि बात काल्पनिक है, आप tense को एक कदम पीछे कर सकते हैं (जैसे second conditional और wish में)।

She talks about London as if she lived there, but she's never been.
वह लंदन के बारे में ऐसे बात करती है मानो वहीं रहती हो, लेकिन वह वहाँ कभी गई ही नहीं। (सच नहीं → past)
My grandpa dances as if he were twenty again.
मेरे दादाजी ऐसे नाचते हैं मानो फिर से बीस साल के हो गए हों।
The kitchen looked as though a storm had passed through it.
रसोई ऐसी लग रही थी मानो वहाँ से कोई तूफ़ान गुज़रा हो। (मुख्य क्रिया past में, पहले की घटना → had + past participle)
- Were या was? as if के बाद सभी कर्ताओं के साथ were ज़्यादा औपचारिक लगता है; बोलचाल में was बहुत आम है। दोनों सही हैं।
- Backshift करना ज़रूरी नहीं है: He talks as if he owns the place भी सही है और बहुत स्वाभाविक लगता है, भले ही बात सच न हो।
बहुत से सीखने वाले हर जगह एक ही tense रखते हैं। जब मुख्य क्रिया past में हो (looked, seemed, acted…), तो as if के बाद backshift करना याद रखें: He looked as if he had been crying (has been crying नहीं)।
4.As if, like या as?

अकेले as का मतलब “as if” नहीं होता, और like को as if के साथ न मिलाएँ। बोलचाल में as if की जगह like + उपवाक्य बहुत आम है (He acts like he owns the place), लेकिन औपचारिक लेखन में as if लगाएँ। पाठ “Like बनाम as” भी देखें।
अकेला “As if!” एक अनौपचारिक विस्मयादिबोधक है, जिसका मतलब है “बिल्कुल नहीं, ऐसा कभी नहीं होगा”: Do you think he'll say sorry? — As if!
5.आम गलतियाँ
