Lição 108 · Etapa 9: Ligando ideias
During ou while
IntermédioDuring vs while
Forma e uso
during + substantivo, while + oração — ao mesmo tempo que
1.Forma
During e while dizem que algo acontece no tempo de outra coisa. A diferença é o que vem depois: during + substantivo, while + oração (sujeito + verbo). For responde a outra pergunta: por quanto tempo.
| Palavra | Seguido de | Responde | Exemplo |
|---|---|---|---|
| during | substantivo (the film, the night, my holiday) | Quando? | I fell asleep during the film. |
| while | oração (sujeito + verbo) | Quando? | I fell asleep while I was watching the film. |
| for | duração (two hours, three days) | Por quanto tempo? | I slept for two hours. |
É como em português: during = “durante” (+ substantivo), while = “enquanto” (+ oração). Sim → while. Só um substantivo → during.
2.During + substantivo
My phone rang twice during the meeting.
Meu celular tocou duas vezes durante a reunião.
Someone knocked on the door during the night.
Alguém bateu na porta durante a noite.
2. Durante o período inteiro
Most shops in our street close during Tet.
Nobody said a word during the whole trip.
Ninguém disse uma palavra durante a viagem inteira.
Comuns: during the day / the night / the summer / the week / the war / the 1990s / my stay / the lesson / the meal.
3.While + oração
1. Duas coisas acontecendo ao mesmo tempo
Linh listens to podcasts while she cooks.
A Linh ouve podcasts enquanto cozinha.
Could you hold my coffee while I find my keys?
Você pode segurar meu café enquanto eu procuro minhas chaves?
Someone stole my bag while I was waiting for the train.
Alguém roubou minha bolsa enquanto eu esperava o trem.
While we were having dinner, the power went out.
Enquanto estávamos jantando, a luz acabou.
3. Falando do futuro: while + presente (não will)
Can you water my plants while I'm away?
Você pode regar minhas plantas enquanto eu estiver fora? (não: while I will be away)
I'll do the shopping while you're at the dentist.
Vou fazer as compras enquanto você estiver no dentista.
Please don't use your phone while driving.
She hurt her back while lifting a heavy box.
My brother loves football, while I prefer badminton.
4.For ou during?
Não use during para medir duração: não “I waited during two hours”.
We went to Phu Quoc for five days during the summer holidays.
(for = por quanto tempo, during = quando)
It rained for three hours during the night.
Choveu por três horas durante a noite.

Aprendi a cozinhar quando morava em Osaka. (while + oração)
I learned to cook during my time in Osaka.
(during + substantivo)
During the last two weeks está certo: “the last two weeks” é um período específico, não uma resposta a “por quanto tempo?”. Para dizer a duração, use for: I've been sick for two weeks.
5.Erros comuns
During I was cooking, I burnt my hand. While I was cooking, I burnt my hand.
