During o while
IntermedioDuring vs while
Forma y uso
during + sustantivo, while + oración — al mismo tiempo que
1.Forma
During y while indican que algo pasa en el tiempo de otra cosa. La diferencia está en lo que va después: during + sustantivo, while + oración (sujeto + verbo). For responde a otra pregunta: cuánto tiempo.
| Palabra | Va seguida de | Responde a | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|---|
| during | sustantivo (the film, the night, my holiday) | ¿Cuándo? | I fell asleep during the film. |
| while | oración (sujeto + verbo) | ¿Cuándo? | I fell asleep while I was watching the film. |
| for | duración (two hours, three days) | ¿Cuánto tiempo? | I slept for two hours. |
El español hace la misma distinción: during ≈ “durante” + sustantivo, while ≈ “mientras” + verbo conjugado. Comprobación rápida: ¿hay sujeto + verbo después? Sí → while. Solo un sustantivo → during.
2.During + sustantivo
My phone rang twice during the meeting.
Someone knocked on the door during the night.
2. Durante todo el periodo
Most shops in our street close during Tet.
Nobody said a word during the whole trip.
Combinaciones frecuentes: during the day / the night / the summer / the week / the war / the 1990s / my stay / the lesson / the meal.
3.While + oración
1. Dos cosas que pasan al mismo tiempo
Linh listens to podcasts while she cooks.
Linh escucha pódcasts mientras cocina.
Could you hold my coffee while I find my keys?
Someone stole my bag while I was waiting for the train.
While we were having dinner, the power went out.
Mientras cenábamos, se fue la luz.
3. Hablar del futuro: while + presente (no will)
Can you water my plants while I'm away?
¿Puedes regar mis plantas mientras esté fuera? (no: while I will be away)
I'll do the shopping while you're at the dentist.
Please don't use your phone while driving.
She hurt her back while lifting a heavy box.
My brother loves football, while I prefer badminton.
4.¿For o during?
For + un periodo de tiempo dice cuánto dura algo. During + un periodo o evento dice cuándo pasa. No uses during para medir la duración: no “I waited during two hours”. Ojo: en español se dice “durante dos horas”, pero en inglés es for two hours.
We went to Phu Quoc for five days during the summer holidays.
(for = cuánto tiempo, during = cuándo)
It rained for three hours during the night.
Llovió tres horas seguidas durante la noche.
I learned to cook while I was living in Osaka.
Aprendí a cocinar mientras vivía en Osaka. (while + oración)
I learned to cook during my time in Osaka.
(during + sustantivo)
During the last two weeks es correcto: “the last two weeks” es un periodo concreto, no una respuesta a “¿cuánto tiempo?”. Para dar la duración, usa for: I've been sick for two weeks.
5.Errores frecuentes
During I was cooking, I burnt my hand. While I was cooking, I burnt my hand.
Sigue una oración → while.
I fell asleep while the film.I fell asleep during the film.
Solo sigue un sustantivo → during.
I lived in Da Nang during five years.I lived in Da Nang for five years.
Duración → for.
I'll call you while I will be in Hanoi.I'll call you while I'm in Hanoi.
