Lezione 109 · Tappa 9: Collegare le idee
By o until
IntermedioBy vs until
Forma e uso
|---|---|---|---|
| by + tempo | non più tardi di (una scadenza) | un'azione che deve solo essere fatta | Please reply by Friday. |
Continua → until. Scadenza → by.
2.By: una scadenza
1. by + tempo = in quel momento o prima
I need the report by Friday.
Mi serve la relazione entro venerdì.
Dinner will be ready by seven.
La cena sarà pronta entro le sette.
The parcel should arrive by the end of the week.
2. by then / by that time / by now
Call me at nine. I'll be home by then.
Chiamami alle nove. Per allora sarò a casa.
They left at noon, so they should be in Da Lat by now.
By next summer, I'll have saved enough for a motorbike.
By 2020, she'd moved to Saigon.
Nel 2020 si era già trasferita a Saigon.
3.Until: continuare fino a
The shop is open until 10 pm.
Il negozio è aperto fino alle 22.
Let's wait here until the rain stops.
Aspettiamo qui finché non smette di piovere.
I work from nine till five.
I didn't get home until midnight.
Sono arrivato a casa solo a mezzanotte.
The film doesn't start until eight.
Stay here until I come back.
Resta qui finché non torno. (non: until I will come back)
I'm not leaving until I've finished this chapter.
4.By the time + frase
By the time + frase = “quando succede questo, l'altra cosa è già successa”.
| Tempo | Struttura | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| Passato | By the time + past simple, … had + V3 | By the time we got to the cinema, the film had started. |
| Futuro | By the time + present simple, … will have + V3 | By the time you get here, I'll have finished. |
By the time I found my keys, the bus had already left.
By the time you read this, I'll be on the plane.
(non: By the time you will read)
Non dire “until the time” con questo significato. Per “quando …, qualcosa era già successo”, usa sempre by the time.
5.By e until a confronto
You can stay until Sunday.
Puoi restare fino a domenica.
You have to leave by Sunday.
Devi andartene entro domenica. (te ne vai domenica o prima)
I'll be at work until six, so I'll be home by half past six.
I can't finish it by Friday.
Non riesco a finirlo entro venerdì. (non rispetterò la scadenza)
I won't finish it until Friday.
Non lo finirò prima di venerdì. (sarà pronto venerdì, non prima)
6.Errori comuni

Scadenza per finire → by.
We stayed at the party by midnight. We stayed at the party until midnight.
Restare continua fino a quel momento → until.

Espressione fissa: by the time.

Per il futuro, dopo by the time usa il presente.
