Leçon 109 · Étape 9: Relier les idées
By ou until
IntermédiaireBy vs until
Forme et emploi
by + moment (au plus tard), until + moment (jusqu'à, sans interruption), by the time…
|---|---|---|---|
| by + moment | pas plus tard que (une date limite) | une action qui doit simplement être faite | Please reply by Friday. |
2.By — une date limite
1. by + moment = à ce moment ou avant
I need the report by Friday.
J'ai besoin du rapport d'ici vendredi.
Dinner will be ready by seven.
Le dîner sera prêt pour sept heures.
The parcel should arrive by the end of the week.
2. by then / by that time / by now
Call me at nine. I'll be home by then.
Appelle-moi à neuf heures. Je serai rentré d'ici là.
They left at noon, so they should be in Da Lat by now.
By next summer, I'll have saved enough for a motorbike.
By 2020, she'd moved to Saigon.
En 2020, elle avait déjà déménagé à Saïgon.
3.Until — jusqu'à
The shop is open until 10 pm.
Le magasin est ouvert jusqu'à 22 h.
Let's wait here until the rain stops.
I work from nine till five.
I didn't get home until midnight.
Je ne suis rentré qu'à minuit.
The film doesn't start until eight.
Stay here until I come back.
(pas : until I will come back)
I'm not leaving until I've finished this chapter.
4.By the time + proposition
| Temps | Structure | Exemple |
|---|---|---|
| Passé | By the time + prétérit, … had + V3 | By the time we got to the cinema, the film had started. |
| Futur | By the time + présent simple, … will have + V3 | By the time you get here, I'll have finished. |

By the time you read this, I'll be on the plane.
(pas : By the time you will read)
Ne dis pas « until the time » dans ce sens. Pour « quand …, quelque chose s'était déjà produit », utilise toujours by the time.
5.By et until côte à côte
You can stay until Sunday.
You have to leave by Sunday.
