1
Hello and welcome back to another shadowing practice video.
2
I'm Claire, a native speaker from the U.S and an English teacher here on YouTube.
3
And thank you so much for clicking this video.
4
Maybe you've seen other shadowing videos for me, and if so, welcome back.
5
Very glad to have you here.
6
If it's your first time joining me for a shadowing practice, let me quickly give you the lowdown on how this will go.
7
So the purpose of shadowing practice is to improve your pronunciation and inflection of the English language,
8
but also your overall fluency.
9
So the process of repeating after me,
10
a native speaker, and then saying it with me at the same time and following my tone,
11
inflection, pronunciation, you will improve your overall English skills and English fluency.
12
Now, first, I will give you the chance to repeat the sentences one after the other right after me,
13
and then we will close the practice by shadowing the whole thing together.
14
So that means you will say it at the same time as me.
15
We will say it together.
16
And you can repeat any part of the video as many times as you need to in order to feel comfortable
17
with saying the phrases and pronouncing all of the words correctly.
18
Today's shadowing practice is a request from one of you.
19
You wanted me to do a shadowing script that would be a natural phone call in English.
20
So I thought for this practice,
21
we will repeat and shadow a voicemail that someone might leave for the doctor's office.
22
So not only will I point out pronunciation tips,
23
of course, you can also pick up natural phrases when making a phone call in English.
24
All right, let's get started.
25
English made easy with Claire.
26
So as always, first repeat after me.
27
Hi, this is...
28
Hi, this is...
29
I'm calling to schedule an appointment with Dr. Miller.
30
I'm calling to schedule an appointment with Dr. Miller.
31
Good.
32
Good.
33
So the pronunciation of the word schedule in English is often a question
34
because we pronounce it differently in American English to what someone, how someone might pronounce it in British English.
35
In American English, we say schedule.
36
So sk with a hard K sound, schedule.
37
And in British English, they would pronounce this word schedule.
38
So with a sh sound at the beginning, schedule.
39
But because I teach the American English pronunciation, I would pronounce this word schedule.
40
I was hoping to come in sometime next week.
41
I was hoping to come in sometime next week.
42
Hoping to come in.
43
We can really link those words together.
44
Hoping to come in.
45
And if you are familiar with my other shadowing videos, I've pointed out before that the word to is often pronounced to,
46
or even duh in rapid speech,
47
hoping to come in, if that's possible. If that's possible.
48
Monday or Tuesday would work best for me.
49
Monday or Tuesday would work best for me. If nothing's available then... If nothing's available then...
50
Good, I'll pronounce available a little slower.
51
Available.
52
Available. If nothing's available then...
53
I can be flexible.
54
I can be flexible.
55
Just let me know what times you have.
56
Let me know.
57
We can link those words all together.
58
The T in let is dropped.
59
Let me know.
60
Let me know.
61
And this is a perfectly acceptable way to speak.
62
It's not slang or informal.
63
It's just how people speak very quickly.
64
Just let me know what times you have.
65
You can reach me.
66
you can reach me.
67
This is a very common phrase that we use when giving our telephone number.
68
So here's where you can reach me.
69
And it means this is the number at which you can call me.
70
You can reach me at 012-345-6789.
71
You can practice your numbers pronunciation here.
72
A note about the numbers actually.
73
When we say phone numbers and there's a zero in the number,
74
you will hear native speakers either say zero or they might say oh.
75
So for example with this phone number they might say 012 instead of 012
76
and that's just another way that we might say the number zero, especially when saying a phone number.
77
If I miss your call, If I miss your call...
78
Again, the word your is often pronounced your in American English, rapid speech.
79
If I miss your call, miss your call, please leave a message.
80
Please leave a message.
81
And this is a phrase you'll often hear if you call someone and you get their voicemail,
82
you will hear, please leave a message after the tone, or please leave a message after the beep.
83
And then you'll hear the beep, and then you can leave your message.
84
You can then start to speak.
85
Okay, let's keep going.
86
And I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
87
And I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
88
Good.
89
As soon as I can.
90
As soon as I can.
91
That kind of all links together.
92
In fact, the whole phrase, and I'll get back to you, and I'll get back to you,
93
it has like a rhythm to it that you can copy my rhythm.
94
And I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
95
So try and repeat the exact rhythm and inflection of my voice.
96
And I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
97
Thanks so much.
98
Bye.
99
Thanks so much.
100
Bye.
101
Again, thanks so much.
102
Thanks so much.
103
That links as well, and you can copy my inflection exactly.
104
Thanks so much.
105
Okay, so hopefully breaking that down helped with some very specific pronunciations and phrases within that voicemail.
106
And you can also use those phrases when making a phone call in English.
107
They're very common, right?
108
You state who you are by saying this is and then your name.
109
You want to explain why you're calling, I'm calling to, and then state your purpose, saying your phone number.
110
You can use the phrase, you can reach me at.
111
And if you want to say you will call that person back when you can,
112
I'll get back to you as soon as I can is a great phrase.
113
And this is a great dialogue for calling somewhere like the doctor's office because it is a little more formal.
114
So it is the appropriate language when making a professional call or a polite call like in this context.
115
Okay, let's shadow the whole voicemail together.
116
So you are going to say it with me and try again to match my inflection and phrasing as well.
117
Repeat this part of the video as many times as you like.
118
Hi, this is...
119
I'm calling to schedule an appointment with Dr. Miller.
120
I was hoping to come in sometime next week, if that's possible.
121
Monday or Tuesday would work best for me.
122
If nothing's available then, I can be flexible.
123
Just let me know what times you have.
124
You can reach me at 012-345-6789.
125
If I miss your call, please leave a message and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
126
Thanks so much.
127
Bye.
128

Об этом уроке

Вы практикуете английский с "Repeat-After-Me + Shadowing Practice: Making a Phone Call" с помощью техники Shadowing — метода, разработанного для подготовки профессиональных переводчиков.

Слушайте каждое предложение, обращайте внимание на ударения и связывание звуков, затем повторяйте вслух уверенно. 15–30 минут ежедневной практики дадут заметные результаты.

Что такое техника Shadowing?
