1
okay welcome to the commentary for solve a problem just going to talk a little bit about this article
2
and about my experience with these ideas
3
so the article focuses on this idea of solving a problem
4
and more specifically the idea of becoming an expert at solving a specific kind of problem.
5
This idea of specific is important because sometimes, I think a lot of times,
6
people try to do too much in their job or with their business.
7
They try to do too much.
8
But we can't be good at everything.
9
And also, even if we are good at everything,
10
we can't communicate our special quality about everything let me tell you what i mean by that
11
it's really talking about marketing here marketing and advertising really
12
but it's it's true for a job too so this idea is
13
that you know people have a you know small ability to think about you
14
and or your business right so usually they think of one
15
or two qualities one or two adjectives one or two ideas strong ideas
16
about your business or about you okay more than that and people are confused they don't remember
17
so you need to be really remarkable you need to be really good at one or two things
18
you can be good at other things also it's okay
19
but you need to be super good at one or two things
20
and not just things when i say things i mean problems solving problems
21
so in this article i talk about my my example
22
that for me i'm really good at solving the problem of
23
speaking english well the problem is people cannot speak english well they can't speak fast
24
they can't understand fast right they know all these grammar rules
25
they studied in school you give them a grammar test they get a good score yay
26
if they have time they can read slowly
27
maybe even faster and they can use a dictionary if necessary so they can read they can understand reading.
28
But the problem is most people cannot speak well, most students, right?
29
That's the big problem.
30
That's the one that I see most of all.
31
Some people can speak great.
32
Okay, they don't need me, right?
33
So I decided this is the problem I want to solve.
34
This is the problem I will be an expert at solving.
35
It's also important to decide what you will not do.
36
In fact, that's just as important, right?
37
Sometimes people, we think, I will do this, but you also must say, what will you not do?
38
I decided I would not teach reading and writing.
39
Now, writing is a big problem also, right?
40
A lot of students need help writing it's a it's a problem it's a very big problem it's a common problem
41
but i decided you know it's too different than speaking it's a very different kind of problem
42
solving the speaking problem is very different uses different methods than solving the writing problem
43
and i decided okay i'm not going to try to do everything
44
because then i won't be a true expert at anything, right?
45
I'll be like every other English teacher.
46
Almost every English teacher, they try to do everything.
47
They try to teach reading.
48
They try to teach grammar.
49
They try to teach writing and speaking and listening, right?
50
They're trying to do everything, and in fact, they do nothing well.
51
Everything is just so -so.
52
Everything is, you know, not bad, Not good.
53
Just kind of medium, average, normal.
54
Being normal is a formula to fail in business.
55
If you're normal, if you are average, if you are good but not remarkable, you're invisible.
56
Nobody will talk about you, right?
57
Nobody will care about you.
58
You will not have excited customers.
59
You want the opposite of normal, right?
60
You want to be different, special.
61
Now, when you're special, sometimes there are problems.
62
Not everybody will like you.
63
So in this article, I talk about my bosses.
64
So my students loved me, most of my students, not all, but most.
65
They really loved my approach.
66
Why?
67
Why?
68
Because I was focusing on their number one problem.
69
I was focusing on this speaking problem, and that's what they wanted to learn.
70
But my bosses did not like my method.
71
They wanted me to do everything.
72
They wanted me to be normal.
73
Bosses like normal.
74
Bosses are usually afraid.
75
Anyone who has a job, they know what I'm talking about.
76
Well, you know.
77
Look at your job.
78
Is your boss an exciting person who wants you to do new things, try new ideas, be really super great at something?
79
Does your boss encourage you to try new things?
80
Is your boss happy when you fail?
81
if you tried something interesting
82
and you fail is your boss say good job i'm glad you failed
83
that was a good idea now try something else
84
if so well you're lucky you have a special boss
85
but most bosses don't do that right
86
if you fail your boss yells at you your boss is upset mostly your boss tells
87
you to follow the rules follow the rules.
88
Follow the rules. Be normal. Be normal. Be normal.
89
That's how you make your boss happy.
90
Follow the rules.
91
Be the same.
92
That's not how you succeed.
93
That's not how you get big success.
94
That's small, small success.
95
If you're a business owner, well, then you definitely can't do this because you're going to fail.
96
You're going to have big problems if you are normal.
97
I see this all the time.
98
Everywhere I see this.
99
For example, in San Francisco, my neighborhood, on my street, we always have new businesses coming and going.
100
They come, they open, everybody's happy, but then one year later, they close.
101
What happened?
102
Why did the business fail?
103
Well, usually it's because they're boring, not because they're bad, right?
104
They're usually okay.
105
They're usually good, but they're always normal.
106
They're average.
107
For example, they open a restaurant, but the food is just the same.
108
You know, they open a Thai restaurant.
109
It's the same as every other
110
Thai restaurant in San Francisco.
111
So why should I go to the restaurant?
112
I already have another restaurant I like.
113
Why should I change if the new one is the same?
114
I'm not going to change my habit unless it's closer or something,
115
but I'm not going to go to a new place unless it has something interesting, special.
116
Now, my favorite
117
Thai restaurant, for example, it's different than the other ones.
118
What's different?
119
Well, it's much spicier, right?
120
The other Thai restaurants, all the other
121
Thai restaurants, it's the same.
122
They're not spicy.
123
They think, oh, Americans don't like spicy food.
124
But this one restaurant is called Thai House.
125
Thai House decided to be different.
126
They decided we're going to cook real
127
Thai food like you find in Thailand, really spicy.
128
We're not going to be boring like everybody else.
129
We don't care if some
130
Americans don't like us.
131
You know, maybe some customers will complain.
132
It's too spicy, too spicy.
133
We don't care.
134
We don't care.
135
We are going to be different.
136
So what happened?
137
What happened?
138
They opened, right?
139
And people come to the restaurant.
140
Some American people come.
141
And the food is too spicy.
142
They complain.
143
Oh, my God.
144
This food is too hot.
145
It's too spicy.
146
then what happens they go home they talk to their friends
147
they say oh i went to this new thai restaurant
148
but my god the food is
149
so spicy well guess what happens some of those friends like spicy food some of those friends think oh well
150
i'll try it that's interesting it's really extra spicy it must be different so they go and they try it
151
and they like it why because they like spicy food
152
and it's spicy yummy what happens next they tell other friends hey
153
this thai restaurant it's not like the other ones
154
it's really really spicy you should try it people talk about it why do they talk about it because it's different
155
something else happens thai people thai people who live in san francisco they go to this restaurant
156
and it tastes good it's more like real thai food it's more like food in thailand
157
and they think oh this is great you know the other restaurants
158
they suck they're terrible the food is boring this one's really good
159
they tell all their thai friends try this restaurant it's it's spicy
160
it's good what happens next what happens next is lots of thai people go to this restaurant so people american people
161
they're walking by they look in the window what do they see in this restaurant
162
they see a lot of thai people a lot of thai people in this one restaurant
163
and they think oh wow look at all the thai people
164
this must be real thai food look it must be good
165
so many thai people in here it must be good
166
so they try it and they talk about it
167
if they hate it they talk about it
168
if they love it they talk about it and
169
so this business this restaurant is super successful always crowded
170
they're open like until midnight it's fantastic they have a great business they're doing very well.
171
They're opening a new, in a new location.
172
I think they have two or three locations now.
173
I'm sure they're making lots of money.
174
They're doing very well.
175
Why?
176
Well, because they solved the problem.
177
What problem did they solve?
178
They solved the problem of boring food, right?
179
There's no spices.
180
They solved this problem of boring
181
Thai food with no spice.
182
Now, is that a problem?
183
Well, it is for Thai people.
184
Thai people think it's a problem.
185
If you're a Thai person and you live in San Francisco, it's a problem.
186
It's a problem.
187
I can't find real Thai food.
188
All the restaurants, they're so boring.
189
No spices.
190
Then you have this new restaurant.
191
It's not boring.
192
Problem solved.
193
I'm going to talk about it to everybody. So that's what happens.
194
That's how you become successful.
195
It's one example.
196
What about the business that fails?
197
The opposite happens, right?
198
They're boring.
199
They open a Thai restaurant in my neighborhood, and the food is the same as every other Thai restaurant.
200
They're afraid.
201
They're afraid.
202
People will complain.
203
Oh, American people don't like spicy, so they don't use spices.
204
So an American person goes to the restaurant, and they eat there.
205
and they there's nothing special it's not bad but it's not great
206
so maybe they like it they like it
207
but do they tell their friends probably not they probably don't talk about it even
208
if they like it even if they come back again
209
and again they probably don't tell their friends oh wow this restaurant it's uh terrible
210
or it's great right it's just normal nobody talks about normal.
211
Nobody talks about average.
212
So the new restaurant, they have a hard time getting new customers.
213
They don't get a lot of new customers.
214
They have some.
215
Maybe they make a little money.
216
Maybe it's a little successful, but not so successful.
217
It doesn't do very well.
218
And eventually, they probably close the business.
219
Or maybe they continue year after year.
220
Just making a little bit, you know, a little bit stressful about money.
221
Never really successful.
222
That's what usually happens.
223
People are afraid, so they play it safe.
224
People play it safe.
225
They do what's normal.
226
They're afraid to be an expert at solving a problem.
227
They're afraid to be special.
228
They're afraid to do just one thing.
229
You can't be afraid.
230
If you're in a job, you can't be afraid of your boss.
231
Your boss will not like what you do sometimes if you become an expert at solving a problem.
232
He'll want you or she'll want you to do things that you think are not important.
233
So don't listen to your boss.
234
It's the same with your customers.
235
Some customers will love you.
236
Some will hate you.
237
That's good with effortless English.
238
Most of my students love me, but some students really hated my teaching. Which ones?
239
Well, students who wanted grammar, who like to take tests, who are focused on test, test, test, grammar, grammar, grammar.
240
They hate effortless English.
241
They hate my teaching, right?
242
I don't do what they want me to do.
243
I don't teach them grammar rules.
244
I don't teach them about tests and how can I use this question and how can I do the TOEFL,
245
how can I get five points here.
246
I don't do that.
247
Also, students who really want to focus on writing, writing, writing, writing, they don't like effortless English either because I don't focus on writing.
248
That's okay.
249
There are other writing teachers they can find another writing teacher.
250
I'm happy.
251
That's fine.
252
So it's okay, because other people love me, and those are the ones who want to speak well and understand.
253
There's the ones who want to speak fast.
254
They want to speak automatically.
255
They want to understand fast.
256
They want to understand automatically, and they love my approach.
257
It's different.
258
It's not normal.
259
It's not average.
260
so you have to think about this you have to become serious you have to decide
261
are you going to solve a problem one or two problems only
262
and be great at it or are you going to play it safe and be average try to do everything so -so
263
it's an important decision very important decision it this decision will decide whether you become very successful
264
and have the life you dream about or whether you have a boring normal disappointing life think very carefully about this decision
265
I hope you'll decide to solve a problem and to do it in a great, fantastic, interesting, remarkable way.
266
I hope you'll be passionate about solving a problem.
267
I hope you'll become famous for solving this one problem.
268
I know you can do it, and I hope you will.
269
Good luck.
