Lektion 95 · Etappe 8: Adjektive, Adverbien & Präpositionen
On time / in time, at the end / in the end
MittelstufeForm & Gebrauch
on time = pünktlich, in time = früh genug; at the end of = der letzte Teil, in the end = schließlich
1.On time und in time
The train left on time, at 8:00 exactly.
Please be on time tomorrow. The meeting starts at nine.
Sei morgen bitte pünktlich. Die Besprechung beginnt um neun.
Hai is never on time. He's always ten minutes late.
Hai ist nie pünktlich. Er kommt immer zehn Minuten zu spät.
in time = früh genug, um etwas zu tun oder bevor etwas passiert — also rechtzeitig. Zwei häufige Muster: in time for + Nomen und in time to + Grundform des Verbs. Das Gegenteil ist too late.
We got to the cinema in time for the start of the film.
Wir waren rechtzeitig zum Filmbeginn im Kino.
Will the package arrive in time for Tet?
I didn't get to the station in time to catch the last train.
| on time | in time | |
|---|---|---|
| Bedeutung | zur geplanten Zeit (pünktlich) | früh genug (rechtzeitig) |
| Gegenteil | late | too late |
| Häufige Muster | be / start / arrive / leave on time | in time for + Nomen · in time to + Verb |
| Betonung | right on time (genau zur geplanten Zeit) | just in time (gerade noch früh genug) |
2.Just in time, in good time, in time = mit der Zeit
- just in time = gerade noch rechtzeitig; einen Moment später wäre es zu spät gewesen.
- in good time (vor allem britisch) = früh, mit Zeit übrig.
- Keine dieser Wendungen hat einen Artikel: nicht „on the time“ oder „in the time“ in diesen Bedeutungen.
The ambulance arrived just in time.
Der Krankenwagen kam gerade noch rechtzeitig.
We left early and got to the airport in good time.
It hurts now, but in time you'll forget about it.
3.At the end und in the end
at the end (of something) = am Ende, im letzten Teil eines Zeitraums, eines Ereignisses oder eines Ortes. Es steht meist mit of: at the end of the month / the film / the class / the street. Wenn klar ist, was du meinst, kannst du den Teil of … weglassen.
We pay the rent at the end of the month.
Wir zahlen die Miete am Monatsende.
Everyone cried at the end of the film.
Am Ende des Films haben alle geweint.
Our house is at the end of the street.
Unser Haus ist am Ende der Straße. (Ort: auch at the end of)
I'll answer your questions at the end.
We couldn't decide where to go, so in the end we stayed at home.
The exam was really hard, but in the end I passed.
He said he wasn't coming, but he came in the end.
Wenn of folgt, ist es fast sicher at: at the end of the film, nicht „in the end of the film“. In the end steht allein und bedeutet „schließlich“.
4.Anfang, Ende, at last, finally
| Wendung | Bedeutung | Beispiel |
|---|---|---|
| at the beginning of … | der erste Teil von etwas | at the beginning of May |
| in the beginning | anfangs (danach hat es sich geändert) | In the beginning, I hated my job. |
| at the end of … | der letzte Teil von etwas | at the end of the year |
| in the end | schließlich, im Ergebnis | In the end, we took a taxi. |
| at last | endlich, nach langem Warten (mit Erleichterung) | At last! The rain has stopped. |
I'd like to thank my parents. |
| at the end of the day | (Redewendung) wenn man alles bedenkt; letztendlich | At the end of the day, it's your choice. |
In the beginning betont „anfangs war es so, später hat es sich geändert“, wie at first. At the beginning of + eine bestimmte Zeit oder Sache bedeutet einfach deren ersten Teil.
In the beginning, living alone was hard, but now I love it.
The rainy season starts at the beginning of May.
Die Regenzeit beginnt Anfang Mai.
At last! The bus is here.
