Lección 95 · Etapa 8: Adjetivos, adverbios y preposiciones
On time / in time, at the end / in the end
IntermedioForma y uso
on time = sin retraso, in time = con tiempo suficiente; at the end of = la última parte, in the end = al final
1.On time e in time
The train left on time, at 8:00 exactly.
Please be on time tomorrow. The meeting starts at nine.
Por favor, sé puntual mañana. La reunión empieza a las nueve.
Hai is never on time. He's always ten minutes late.
Hai nunca llega puntual. Siempre llega diez minutos tarde.
in time = con suficiente antelación para hacer algo o antes de que pase algo. Dos estructuras frecuentes: in time for + sustantivo e in time to + forma base. Lo contrario es too late.
We got to the cinema in time for the start of the film.
Will the package arrive in time for Tet?
I didn't get to the station in time to catch the last train.

| on time | in time | |
|---|---|---|
| Lo contrario | late | too late |
| Estructuras frecuentes | be / start / arrive / leave on time | in time for + sustantivo · in time to + verbo |
| Para enfatizar | right on time (justo a la hora prevista) | just in time (justo a tiempo) |
→ on time. → in time.
2.Just in time, in good time, in time = con el tiempo
- just in time = justo a tiempo; un momento después ya habría sido demasiado tarde.
- Ninguna de estas expresiones lleva artículo: no “on the time” ni “in the time” con estos significados.
The ambulance arrived just in time.
La ambulancia llegó justo a tiempo.
We left early and got to the airport in good time.
It hurts now, but in time you'll forget about it.
3.At the end e in the end
at the end (of something) = al final, en la última parte de un período, un evento o un lugar. Normalmente lleva of: at the end of the month / the film / the class / the street.
We pay the rent at the end of the month.
Pagamos el alquiler a fin de mes.
Everyone cried at the end of the film.
Todos lloraron al final de la película.
Our house is at the end of the street.
(lugar: también at the end of)
I'll answer your questions at the end.
We couldn't decide where to go, so in the end we stayed at home.
The exam was really hard, but in the end I passed.

Si después va of, casi seguro que es at: at the end of the film, no “in the end of the film”. In the end va solo y significa “finalmente”.
4.Beginning, end, at last, finally
| Expresión | Significado | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| at the beginning of … | la primera parte de algo | at the beginning of May |
| in the beginning | al principio (luego las cosas cambiaron) | In the beginning, I hated my job. |
| at the end of … | la última parte de algo | at the end of the year |
| in the end | finalmente, como resultado | In the end, we took a taxi. |
| at last | por fin, después de una larga espera (con alivio) | At last! The rain has stopped. |
| finally | después de mucho tiempo; o el último punto de una lista | Finally, I'd like to thank my parents. |
| at the end of the day | (expresión idiomática) teniendo todo en cuenta | At the end of the day, it's your choice. |
In the beginning recalca “al principio era así, y después cambió”, como at first. At the beginning of + un momento o una cosa concreta significa simplemente su primera parte.
In the beginning, living alone was hard, but now I love it.
