Forma y uso

by car, by mistake, by 5 o'clock, a book by Nguyen Du, by the window — los usos principales de by

1.By + medio de transporte

Usa by + medio de transporte para decir cómo viajas: by car, by bus, by train, by plane, by taxi, by bike, by boat; también by air, by sea, by road. Después de by no hay artículo, ni my / the.

  • I usually go to work by bus.

Normalmente voy al trabajo en autobús.

  • We travelled to Hue by train.

    Viajamos a Hue en tren.

Pero caminando se dice on foot. Y cuando el vehículo lleva delante a / the / my / his…, no se usa by: usa in (auto, taxi) u on (autobús, tren, avión, bicicleta).

En generalUno en concreto
by carin my dad's car · in a taxi
by buson the 7:30 bus
by trainon the night train
by bikeon my bike
on foot (normalmente no by foot)—

2.By + comunicación, pago y método

by también dice cómo se hace algo: by email, by post (en EE. UU.: by mail), by phone, by card, by bank transfer. Para pagar con billetes y monedas, di in cash (o pay cash).

  • Can you send me the file by email?

¿Me puedes mandar el archivo por correo electrónico?

  • by mistake = por error, sin querer
  • by accident / by chance = sin planearlo, por casualidad
  • by hand = a mano, hecho por una persona y no por una máquina
  • by + -ing = la manera de hacer algo (mira la lección “Preposición + -ing”)
  • by myself / by yourself / by herself… = solo, sin ayuda
