By
IntermédioForma e uso
by car, by mistake, by 5 o'clock, a book by Nguyen Du, by the window — os principais usos de by
1.By + meio de transporte
Use by + meio de transporte para dizer como você viaja: by car, by bus, by train, by plane, by taxi, by bike, by boat; também by air, by sea, by road. Depois de by não há artigo nem my / the.
I usually go to work by bus.
Normalmente vou para o trabalho de ônibus.
We travelled to Hue by train.
Viajamos para Hue de trem.
Mas a pé é on foot. E quando o veículo tem a / the / my / his… antes dele, não se usa by: use in (car, taxi) ou on (bus, train, plane, bike).
| Em geral | Um veículo específico |
|---|---|
| by car | in my dad's car · in a taxi |
| by bus | on the 7:30 bus |
| by train | on the night train |
| by bike | on my bike |
| on foot (normalmente não by foot) | — |
2.By + comunicação, pagamento e método
by também diz como algo é feito: by email, by post (americano: by mail), by phone, by card, by bank transfer. Para dinheiro vivo (notas e moedas), diga in cash (ou pay cash).

3.By + um prazo
by + um horário = no máximo até esse momento — nele ou antes dele. É um prazo. Compare com until = algo continua até esse momento (veja a lição “By ou until”).
