移動の手段を言うときは by + 交通手段を使います：by car、by bus、by train、by plane、by taxi、by bike、by boat。by air、by sea、by road もあります。by の後ろには冠詞をつけず、my / the もつけません。

• I usually go to work by bus.

  ふだんはバスで通勤しています。

• We travelled to Hue by train.

  フエまで電車で行きました。

ただし、歩くときは on foot です。また、乗り物の前に a / the / my / his… がつくときは by を使わず、in（car、taxi）または on（bus、train、plane、bike）を使います。

by は何かをどうやってするかも表します：by email、by post（アメリカ英語：by mail）、by phone、by card、by bank transfer。お札や硬貨で払うときは in cash（または pay cash）と言います。

• Can you send me the file by email?

  そのファイルをメールで送ってもらえますか？

• Can I pay by card? — Sorry, we only take cash.

  カードで払えますか？ — すみません、現金のみです。

• I paid for the tickets in cash.

  チケット代は現金で払いました。（by cash ではない）

• by mistake = 間違って、うっかり
• by accident / by chance = 予定外に、偶然
• by hand = 機械ではなく人の手で作った・した
• by + -ing = 何かをするやり方（レッスン「前置詞 + -ing」を参照）
• by myself / by yourself / by herself… = 一人で、だれの助けも借りずに

• Sorry, I took your umbrella by mistake.

  すみません、間違ってあなたの傘を持っていってしまいました。

• We met by chance at the market.

  私たちは市場で偶然会いました。

• These bags are made by hand.

  これらのバッグは手作りです。

• She learned English by watching films.

  彼女は映画を見て英語を覚えました。

• Did you make this cake by yourself?

  このケーキ、自分一人で作ったの？

💡手に持って使う道具には by ではなく with を使います：cut it with a knife、write with a pen。By は交通手段や一般的な方法に使います：by bus、by email、by hand。

by + 時 = その時までに（その時か、それより前に）。締め切りを表します。until = その時までずっと続く、と比べてみましょう（レッスン「By と until」を参照）。

• Please finish the report by Friday.

  金曜日までに報告書を仕上げてください。（金曜日より遅れずに）

• I'll be home by six, I promise.

  6時までには家に帰るよ、約束する。

• You must return the book by Monday.

  月曜日までにその本を返さなければなりません。（締め切り）

• You can keep the book until Monday.

  その本は月曜日まで借りていていいですよ。（月曜日までずっと持っている）

by + 人は、何かを書いた・作った人を表します：a poem by Nguyen Du、a song by Trinh Cong Son、a film by…。受動態では、by は動作をする人や物を表します（レッスン「受動態」を参照）。

• The Tale of Kieu is a famous poem by Nguyen Du.

  『キエウ物語』はグエン・ズーの有名な詩です。

• Have you read anything by Haruki Murakami?

  村上春樹の作品を何か読んだことがありますか？

• This picture was painted by my grandfather.

  この絵は祖父が描きました。

• The village was hit by a storm last night.

  昨夜、村は嵐に襲われました。

注意：a picture by my grandfather = 祖父が描いた絵。a picture of my grandfather = 祖父が写っている絵。作者や作り手には of や from ではなく by を使います。

by = すぐそばに（next to / beside に近い）：by the window、by the door、by the sea、by the river。

• She always sits by the window.

  彼女はいつも窓際に座ります。

• We stayed in a small hotel by the sea.

  私たちは海辺の小さなホテルに泊まりました。

by + 数は、何かがどれだけ変化したか、差がどれだけあったかを表します。increase、rise、go up、fall、drop、win、lose、miss… の後ろによく使います。

• The price of rice went up by 10% last year.

  去年、お米の値段が10%上がりました。

• We lost the match by two goals.

  私たちは2点差で試合に負けました。

• I missed the bus by a minute.

  1分差でバスに乗り遅れました。

• ほかの決まった言い方：by the way（新しい話題を出すとき：ところで）、one by one（1つずつ）、little by little（少しずつ）、step by step（一歩ずつ）。
• paid by the hour = 働いた時間ごとに支払われる（時給制）。a room 4 metres by 5 metres = 4 × 5 m の部屋。

• ✗She goes to school by the bike.

  ✓She goes to school by bike.

  by + 交通手段には冠詞をつけません。

• ✗We went to Vung Tau by my dad's car.

  ✓We went to Vung Tau in my dad's car.

  my / his / the がつくとき → in（car）/ on（bus、bike）。

• ✗We came here by foot.

  ✓We came here on foot.

  歩くときの決まった言い方は on foot です。

• ✗This picture was painted from my grandfather.

  ✓This picture was painted by my grandfather.

  受動態で動作をする人 → by。

• ✗You must return the book until Monday.

  ✓You must return the book by Monday.

  締め切り → by。until は「〜までずっと続く」という意味です。

• ✗He cut the cake by a knife.

  ✓He cut the cake with a knife.
