On time / in time, at the end / in the end
IntermedioForma e uso
on time = non in ritardo, in time = abbastanza presto; at the end of = l'ultima parte, in the end = alla fine
1.On time e in time
on time = all'orario previsto, secondo l'orario o gli accordi: puntuale, non in ritardo.
The train left on time, at 8:00 exactly.
Please be on time tomorrow. The meeting starts at nine.
Domani, per favore, sii puntuale. La riunione comincia alle nove.
Hai is never on time. He's always ten minutes late.
Hai non è mai puntuale. È sempre dieci minuti in ritardo.
Due strutture frequenti: in time for + sostantivo e in time to + forma base del verbo. Il contrario è too late.
We got to the cinema in time for the start of the film.
Will the package arrive in time for Tet?
I didn't get to the station in time to catch the last train.
| on time | in time | |
|---|---|---|
| Significato | all'orario previsto | abbastanza presto |
| Contrario | late | too late |
| Strutture frequenti | be / start / arrive / leave on time | in time for + sostantivo · in time to + verbo |
| Enfasi | right on time (esattamente all'orario previsto) | just in time (appena in tempo) |
Un test veloce: chiediti “Era in ritardo rispetto al programma?” → on time. Chiediti “Era abbastanza presto per fare qualcosa?” → in time.
2.Just in time, in good time, in time = col tempo
- just in time = appena in tempo; un attimo dopo sarebbe stato troppo tardi.
- Nessuna di queste espressioni vuole l'articolo: non si dice “on the time” o “in the time” con questi significati.
The ambulance arrived just in time.
L'ambulanza è arrivata appena in tempo.
We left early and got to the airport in good time.
Siamo partiti presto e siamo arrivati in aeroporto con largo anticipo.
It hurts now, but in time you'll forget about it.
3.At the end e in the end
at the end (of something) = nella parte finale di un periodo, di un evento o di un luogo. Di solito vuole of: at the end of the month / the film / the class / the street.
We pay the rent at the end of the month.
Paghiamo l'affitto alla fine del mese.
Everyone cried at the end of the film.
Alla fine del film hanno pianto tutti.
Our house is at the end of the street.
Casa nostra è in fondo alla strada. (luogo: anche at the end of)
I'll answer your questions at the end.
We couldn't decide where to go, so in the end we stayed at home.
The exam was really hard, but in the end I passed.
He said he wasn't coming, but he came in the end.
Se c'è of, è quasi sicuramente at: at the end of the film, non “in the end of the film”.
4.Beginning, end, at last, finally
| Espressione | Significato | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| at the beginning of … | la prima parte di qualcosa | at the beginning of May |
| in the beginning | all'inizio (poi le cose sono cambiate) | In the beginning, I hated my job. |
| at the end of … | l'ultima parte di qualcosa | at the end of the year |
| in the end | alla fine, come risultato | In the end, we took a taxi. |
| at last | finalmente, dopo una lunga attesa (con sollievo) | At last! The rain has stopped. |
| finally | dopo molto tempo; oppure l'ultimo punto di un elenco | Finally, I'd like to thank my parents. |
| at the end of the day | (modo di dire) tutto sommato, considerato tutto | At the end of the day, it's your choice. |
In the beginning sottolinea “all'inizio era così, poi è cambiato”, come at first. At the beginning of + un momento o una cosa precisa indica semplicemente la sua prima parte.
In the beginning, living alone was hard, but now I love it.
All'inizio vivere da solo era difficile, ma adesso mi piace tantissimo.
