On time / in time, at the end / in the end
IntermédiaireForme et emploi
on time = pas en retard, in time = assez tôt ; at the end of = la dernière partie, in the end = finalement
1.On time et in time
The train left on time, at 8:00 exactly.
Le train est parti à l'heure, à 8 h pile.
Please be on time tomorrow. The meeting starts at nine.
Sois à l'heure demain, s'il te plaît. La réunion commence à neuf heures.
Hai is never on time. He's always ten minutes late.
Hai n'est jamais à l'heure. Il a toujours dix minutes de retard.
in time = assez tôt pour faire quelque chose, ou avant que quelque chose arrive. Deux structures courantes : in time for + nom et in time to + base verbale. Le contraire est too late.
We got to the cinema in time for the start of the film.
Will the package arrive in time for Tet?
Le colis arrivera-t-il à temps pour le Têt ?
I didn't get to the station in time to catch the last train.
| on time | in time | |
|---|---|---|
| Sens | à l'heure prévue | assez tôt |
| Contraire | late | too late |
| Structures courantes | be / start / arrive / leave on time | in time for + nom · in time to + verbe |
| Pour insister | right on time (pile à l'heure prévue) | just in time (juste à temps) |
» → in time.
2.Just in time, in good time, in time = avec le temps
- just in time = juste à temps ; un instant plus tard, ça aurait été trop tard.
The ambulance arrived just in time.
L'ambulance est arrivée juste à temps.
We left early and got to the airport in good time.
It hurts now, but in time you'll forget about it.
3.At the end et in the end
at the end (of something) = à la fin, dans la dernière partie d'une période, d'un événement ou d'un lieu. Il prend en général of : at the end of the month / the film / the class / the street.
We pay the rent at the end of the month.
Everyone cried at the end of the film.
Our house is at the end of the street.
(lieu : aussi at the end of)
I'll answer your questions at the end.
We couldn't decide where to go, so in the end we stayed at home.

He said he wasn't coming, but he came in the end.
Si of suit, c'est presque sûrement at : at the end of the film, et pas « in the end of the film ». In the end s'emploie seul et veut dire « finalement ».
4.Beginning, end, at last, finally
| Expression | Sens | Exemple |
|---|---|---|
| at the beginning of … | la première partie de quelque chose | at the beginning of May |
| in the beginning | au début (puis les choses ont changé) | In the beginning, I hated my job. |
| at the end of … | la dernière partie de quelque chose | at the end of the year |
| in the end | finalement, au bout du compte | In the end, we took a taxi. |
| at last | enfin, après une longue attente (avec soulagement) | At last! The rain has stopped. |
| finally | après longtemps ; ou le dernier point d'une liste | Finally, I'd like to thank my parents. |
| at the end of the day | (expression idiomatique) tout bien considéré | At the end of the day, it's your choice. |
In the beginning souligne « c'était comme ça au début, puis ça a changé », comme at first. At the beginning of + un moment ou une chose précise veut simplement dire sa première partie.
In the beginning, living alone was hard, but now I love it.
