Test Practice Track 2
2
Listening Part 2 You will hear a woman called Janet Stevens talking on the radio about a new science centre.
3
Before you listen, you have a chance to look at questions 1 to 4.
4
Now listen and answer questions 1 to 4.
5
Good morning and welcome to Radio B109.
6
This morning's guest is Janet Stephens, who's going to tell us about the new Science Centre.
7
Welcome to the show, Janet.
8
Thanks for having me.
9
So, are you happy with the attendance so far, Janet?
10
Well, we only opened our doors two months ago, and we really thought it would take a while for people to get behind the idea of visiting a science centre,
11
but we've been overwhelmed with the support we've received.
12
Even in the first week, when we thought we might struggle because there was a bus strike on, we were almost at capacity.
13
That's great.
14
So, what sort of people come to the Science Centre?
15
I imagine it's very popular with schools.
16
Well, yes, and we do encourage school groups to visit.
17
Though we have to balance that with allowing access to the general public.
18
You know, there's an enormous amount of interest in science right now.
19
Just look at how many science and discovery shows there are on TV.
20
And a lot of that is driven by the 18 to 20 year old age group.
21
I'd say they make up the majority of our visitors.
22
Primary school children also love the centre, and there are lots of activities aimed at them.
23
But young families only make up about a quarter of our daily totals.
24
Interesting.
25
You've got a great location.
26
I know.
27
It was difficult finding a site big enough, but also close enough to the city centre so that we were accessible to everyone.
28
I don't think they could have chosen better, to be honest.
29
There's a train and bus station ten minutes walk away.
30
But even better than that, we're right on the river, and you can see it from almost every window as well as from the rooftop cafe,
31
which is well worth a visit, by the way.
32
And I believe there's a special space talk coming up?
33
Yes.
34
Once our lecture theatre is completed, we hope to have talks regularly that any visitors can attend.
35
In the meantime, to get us started,
36
we're interviewing an astronaut who's actually on the International Space Station and that will be broadcast on our social media platform,
37
but it's by special invitation only.
38
Anyone who visits the Science Centre this month
39
or books a future visit will automatically be given a link and a special code to use online.
40
We're expecting it to be a real hit.
41
That sounds exciting.
42
You now have some time to look at questions 5 to 10.
43
Now listen and answer questions 5 to 10.
44
And what can you tell us about the exhibits at the Science Centre?
45
Well, first of all, there's the Wonder Lab.
46
As the name suggests, this is about the wonder of scientific discovery.
47
And we've tried to capture that by recreating various lab experiments that even the youngest children are encouraged to try out.
48
There are ten different workstations, and people need a bit of time at each one, so I plan to get there before 10am if you don't want to have to rush through.
49
Next there's rhythm and sound, which produces the most noise of anywhere in the centre.
50
It's open to all ages, but we do require parents to supervise their children at all times, just because it can get a bit boisterous at times.
51
In the exhibit, you can see the physics behind the different ways musicians create and alter sound.
52
But we don't use traditional instruments.
53
Instead, there are fun things like plastic tubes of different lengths
54
that you hit with a flat piece of rubber to make a tune.
55
There's also a keyboard on the floor that I've yet to see anyone resist running across.
56
After that, there's rugged rovers.
57
This is about how we explore different climates and environments, whether that's on the seabed or on another planet.
58
You put on a protective suit and climb into the special simulator
59
and try to steer your vehicle over some very bumpy rocks to reach home as fast as you can.
60
But don't worry, anyone can get to be an astronaut for the day because it's all virtual, so there aren't any age restrictions.
61
Masters of Flight looks at the history of aviation, and if you have children in primary school,
62
this will really appeal to them because they learn how to build a paper plane
63
and they can compete with each other to see whose flies furthest.
64
There is a small fee to cover the materials, but everyone says it's worth it and you do get something to take home with you at the end.
65
Another really exciting part is where you get to experiment with balloons and different gases, trying to get them to take off.
66
pattern pods explores the amazing patterns in the natural world from rock formations to plants
67
and animals and even spider webs there's some wonderful photography in there
68
and you can get prints of these from the poster section
69
of the gift shop they're some of our best sellers it's actually a really calming serene experience
70
so you'd imagine this exhibit would mostly appeal to the older visitors
71
but we do get children in there too admiring the images
72
or doing some coloring in at the kids table finally math
73
amazing as you'd imagine this highlights the world of mathematics and shows how maths features in so much of the real world.
74
Although that may not sound very exciting, I'm sure you'll be amazed how much fun you'll have in this section,
75
especially playing with a giant -sized calculator.
76
I'll just warn you that this is only a temporary exhibit, so be sure to get in now before it closes next month.
77
So, those are some of the main exhibits.
78
Thank you.
