1
I climbed Mount Fuji when I was in Japan.
2
I had a mild cold before the climb, but since the weather looked perfect, I didn't want to cancel.
3
Mount Fuji has 10 stations and is about 3,700 meters high.
4
We started from the fifth station.
5
At first, it was easy, but after the seventh station, it got steep and rocky.
6
The trail was narrow and crowded, so we were moving painfully slow.
7
After about five hours, we reached the mountain hut at the eighth station.
8
It wasn't comfortable, just thin bedding on the floor with people lying side by side.
9
I managed to get a couple of hours of sleep before we set off again around one in the morning.
10
There were already long lines of people, headlamps stretching up the trail like a glowing chain.
11
It took almost three hours to reach the summit, but we made it just in time for the sunrise.
12
The red sun slowly rose above the sea of clouds and the whole sky lit up.
13
It was incredible.
14
After that, we walked around the crater for about an hour to reach the highest point, and waited another hour in line just to take a solo photo with the summit monument.
15
But coming down was brutal.
16
The trail was slippery and covered in loose gravel.
17
My cold was getting worse, my headache wouldn't go away, and my feet and knees were killing me.
18
I had to stop for breaks now and then, and at one point, I even thought about calling for rescue.
19
But I just kept pushing on.
20
Eventually, after more than five hours, we made it to the bottom, completely exhausted.
21
We had more plans for the day, but I ended up getting a fever and spent the rest of the day in bed.
22
Looking back, I'm glad I pushed through.
23
That sunrise felt like I'd earned it.
