Forma e uso

used to + verbo — un’abitudine o uno stato passato che non è più vero

1.Forma

StrutturaEsempio
AffermativaS + used to + VI used to live in Hue.
NegativaS + didn't use to + VShe didn't use to like coffee.
DomandaDid + S + use to + V?Did you use to play football?
Risposta breveYes, S did. / No, S didn't.Yes, I did. / No, I didn't.

Dopo did / didn't si toglie la -d: use to (did indica già il passato, come in did you go, non did you went). Un'altra negativa comune è never used to: I never used to eat vegetables. Nell'inglese britannico formale si trova anche used not to.

Used to e use to si pronunciano allo stesso modo: /ˈjuːs tə/, con la /s/ e non con la /z/ del verbo use, e la d quasi non si sente. Siccome suonano uguali, è facile sbagliare a scriverli: scrivi used nelle frasi affermative e use dopo did / didn't.

2.Quando si usa

  • I used to play badminton every evening after school.

  • My grandma used to walk to the market every morning.

2. Stati del passato: cose vere per tanto tempo, ma che sono cambiate (be, have, live, like, think, believe…)

  • This café used to be a bookshop.

Questo bar una volta era una libreria.

  • Lan used to have very short hair.

Lan una volta aveva i capelli cortissimi.

  • I used to think English grammar was boring.

Pensavo che la grammatica inglese fosse noiosa.

3. There used to be: qualcosa c'era in un posto, ma ora non c'è più

  • There used to be a big banyan tree in front of our school.

  • There didn't use to be so much traffic in Da Nang.

Used to esiste solo al passato.

3.Used to o past simple?

Non usare used to per:

  • Una cosa successa una volta sola: I went to Sa Pa last year (non: used to go).
  • Dire quante volte: I visited her three times (non: used to visit her three times).
  • Dire esattamente per quanto tempo: I lived in Hue for five years (di solito non si dice used to live there for five years).
  • Un'azione in corso in un certo momento: I was watching TV when you called (non used to watch).
  • We used to go to Vung Tau every summer, but last year we went to Phu Quoc.

Andavamo a Vung Tau ogni estate, ma l'anno scorso siamo andati a Phu Quoc. (used to = tante volte; went = una volta)

4.Used to, be used to e would

StrutturaSignificatoEsempio
used to + Vsi faceva o era vero prima, ora noI used to live alone.
be used to + V-ing / Nessere abituato a, trovare normaleI'm used to living alone.
get used to + V-ing / Nabituarsi aI'm getting used to living alone.
would + Vun'azione ripetuta nel passatoEvery Sunday we would visit Grandma.

Be / get used to ha davanti be o get ed è seguito da -ing o da un sostantivo, con un significato completamente diverso: vedi la lezione “Be used to” + -ing. Would può sostituire used to per le azioni ripetute, ma non per gli stati: We used to have a dog (non: would have a dog). Vedi la lezione “Would”.

5.Errori comuni

  • I use to play football when I was young.

I used to play football when I was young.

Affermativa → used (con la -d).

  • I didn't used to like spicy food.

I didn't use to like spicy food.

Dopo didn't si toglie la -d: use to (didn't used to si vede spesso, ma è considerato scorretto).

My father used to work in a factory.

Dopo used to si usa la forma base del verbo.

  • I was used to play tennis, but I stopped.

I used to play tennis, but I stopped.

Un'abitudine passata non vuole be; be used to + -ing significa “essere abituato a”.

  • I use to get up at six every day.

I usually get up at six every day.

    Un'abitudine presente → present simple.

  • I used to go to Japan three times.

I went to Japan three times.

Un numero di volte → past simple.
