形と使い方
a/an は多くの中の一つや初めて出るもの、the は話し手も聞き手も分かっているもの
1.a か an か
a / an は「1つの」という意味です。単数の可算名詞の前にだけ置きます（a book, an egg）。a か an かは、次の語のつづりではなく最初の音で決まります。

形容詞があるときは、形容詞の最初の音を見ます：an old bike、でも a big apple。
She's an honest person.
彼女は正直な人です。（h を発音しない → an）
It's a useful app.
便利なアプリです。（useful は /j/ で始まる → a）
I'll be back in an hour.
1時間で戻ります。
日本語には冠詞がありません。英語では、単数の可算名詞の前にはほぼ必ず a/an/the/my… が必要です：My mum is a teacher. I have a motorbike.
2.a / an を使うとき
1. 初めて話題に出すとき、または多くの中のどれか1つのとき — 聞き手はどれのことかわかりません
I saw a really funny video yesterday.
昨日、すごくおもしろい動画を見ました。
Is there a pharmacy near here?
この近くに薬局はありますか？
2. 人や物が何であるかを言うとき — 職業、人や物の種類
My sister is a nurse.
姉は看護師です。（My sister is nurse とは言わない）
It's a beautiful day.
いい天気ですね。
3.「〜につき」という意味 — 頻度、値段、速さ
I go swimming twice a week.
週に2回泳ぎに行きます。
Mangoes are 40,000 dong a kilo.
マンゴーは1キロ4万ドンです。
3.the を使うとき
1. 聞き手がどれのことかわかるとき — すでに話に出ているから
I ordered a pizza and a salad. The pizza was cold.
ピザとサラダを注文しました。ピザは冷めていました。
We stayed at a small hotel. The owner was really friendly.
小さなホテルに泊まりました。オーナーがとても親切でした。
2. 状況からどれのことか明らかなとき — たとえば家の中、教室、自分の町など
Can you close the window, please?
窓を閉めてもらえますか？
Excuse me, where's the bathroom?
すみません、お手洗いはどこですか？
3. 1つしかないもの：the sun, the moon, the sky, the sea, the internet
The sun is very strong today.
今日は日差しがとても強いです。
I found the recipe on the internet.
そのレシピはインターネットで見つけました。
4. 名詞の後ろの語句がどれのことかを示すとき
Who's the girl in the red dress?
赤いワンピースの女の子は誰ですか？
The book you lent me is great.
あなたが貸してくれた本、すごくいいです。
発音：the は子音の音の前ではふつう /ðə/（the book）、母音の音の前ではよく /ði/（the apple）と発音します。
4.a / an と the の違い
同じ名詞でも、冠詞が違うと意味が変わります：a = どれか1つ、the = 話し手と聞き手の両方がわかっている、その1つ。
Can I borrow a pen?
ペンを借りてもいいですか？（どのペンでもいい）
Can I borrow the pen on your desk?
机の上のペンを借りてもいいですか？（その特定のペン）
I need a taxi.
タクシーが必要です。（まだ特定のタクシーはない）
The taxi is here.
タクシーが来ました。（呼んでおいたタクシー）
覚えておきましょう：複数名詞や不可算名詞には a/an を使いません（a books, a water ではない）— レッスン「可算名詞と不可算名詞」を見てください。グループ全体を一般的に言うときは、ふつう冠詞をつけません：I love cats. — レッスン「the を使うとき・使わないとき」を見てください。
5.よくある間違い
My father is engineer.My father is an engineer.
職業には a/an が必要です。

複数名詞に a はつけません。
