Lección 18 · Etapa 2: Palabras de uso diario: pronombres, artículos, preposiciones
Artículos: a / an / the
PrincipianteArticles: a / an / the
Forma y uso
a/an para uno entre muchos o algo nuevo, the para el que ambos ya conocen
1.¿A o an?
|---|---|---|
| a | un sonido consonántico | a book, a car, a university /juː/, a uniform, a one-way ticket /w/ |
| an | un sonido vocálico | an apple, an egg, an idea, an umbrella, an hour (h muda), an MP3 /em/ |
Si hay un adjetivo, fíjate en el primer sonido del adjetivo: an old bike pero a big apple.
She's an honest person.
Es una persona honesta. (h muda → an)
It's a useful app.
Es una aplicación útil. (useful empieza por /j/ → a)
I'll be back in an hour.
Vuelvo en una hora.
En español decimos “mi madre es profesora” o “tengo moto” sin artículo, pero en inglés un sustantivo contable en singular casi siempre necesita a/an/the/my… delante: My mum is a teacher. I have a motorbike.
2.Cuándo usar a / an
I saw a really funny video yesterday.
Ayer vi un video muy gracioso.
Is there a pharmacy near here?
¿Hay alguna farmacia por aquí?
My sister is a nurse.
Mi hermana es enfermera. (no: My sister is nurse)
It's a beautiful day.
Hace un día precioso.
I go swimming twice a week.
Voy a nadar dos veces por semana.
Mangoes are 40,000 dong a kilo.
Los mangos están a 40 000 dongs el kilo.
3.Cuándo usar the
I ordered a pizza and a salad. The pizza was cold.
Pedí una pizza y una ensalada. La pizza estaba fría.
We stayed at a small hotel. The owner was really friendly.
Nos alojamos en un hotel pequeño. El dueño era muy simpático.
Can you close the window, please?
¿Puedes cerrar la ventana, por favor?
Excuse me, where's the bathroom?
Perdone, ¿dónde está el baño?
3. Solo hay uno: the sun, the moon, the sky, the sea, the internet
The sun is very strong today.
Hoy el sol pega muy fuerte.
I found the recipe on the internet.
Encontré la receta en internet.
Who's the girl in the red dress?
¿Quién es la chica del vestido rojo?
The book you lent me is great.
El libro que me prestaste es genial.
Pronunciación: the suele sonar /ðə/ delante de un sonido consonántico (the book) y a menudo /ði/ delante de un sonido vocálico (the apple).
4.a / an o the
Can I borrow a pen?
¿Me prestas un bolígrafo? (cualquier bolígrafo)
Can I borrow the pen on your desk?
I need a taxi.
Necesito un taxi. (todavía ningún taxi en concreto)
The taxi is here.
