The thing is…, What I mean is…, It's worth -ing —

The thing is…, What I mean is…, It's worth…

The thing is, … / The problem is, …
The point is, …
What I mean is, … / What I'm saying is, …
I was wondering if …節(could / would…)
It's (not) worth …-ing /
There's no point (in) … / It's no use …-ing
It's time …to + 動詞 / for + 人 + to + 動詞 / 過去形の節今すぐ何かをするべきだと言う

1. The thing is… / The problem is…

  • I'd love to come. The thing is, I don't have a car.

  • The problem is, nobody knows the password.

2. The point is…

  • I know it's expensive, but the point is, it will last for years.

3. What I mean is… / What I'm trying to say is…

  • I didn't say it was bad. What I mean is, it could be shorter.

  • What I'm trying to say is, we need more time.

4. It's not that… It's just that…

  • It's not that I don't like your cooking. It's just that I'm not very hungry.

5. I was wondering if…

  • I was wondering if you could help me with my CV.

  • I was wondering if you'd like to join us for dinner.

文型はひとかたまりでなめらかに言い、本題の前で少し間を置きます:「The thing is, | I don't have a car.」

The film is worth watching(worth watching it ではない)。短い形:It's worth it.
  • There's no point (in) + -ing / It's no use + -ing = 〜しても無駄だ。 There's no point arguing.
  • can't / couldn't help + -ing = つい〜してしまう。can't help but + 原形 とも言えますが(I couldn't help but laugh)、2つを混ぜないこと。
I look forward to… はかたい言い方(メール)、I'm looking forward to…
  • It's worth trying the street food here.

(worth to try ではない)

  • There's no point in calling her now. She's asleep.

  • When he fell off his chair, I couldn't help laughing.

  • I'm really looking forward to seeing you at the weekend.

  • can't wait + to + 動詞 = 待ちきれない:I can't wait to see my family.(look forward to + -ing と比べてみましょう。)
  • It's time + to + 動詞 = 今がそのときだ。It's time for + 人 + to + 動詞。
I'd rather not talk about it.
  • It turns out (that) + 節 = 意外なことがわかった。
  • Tet is next week, and I can't wait to see my family.

  • It's late. It's time to go home.

  • It's about time you told her the truth.

  • It turns out Minh is Lan's cousin.

  • You didn't sleep last night? No wonder you're tired.

  • To be honest, … To be honest, I didn't enjoy the film.
  • If you ask me, … / The way I see it, … If you ask me, it's too expensive.
  • Having said that, … / On the other hand, … The flat is small. Having said that, it's in a great area.
  • By the way, … By the way, did you get my message?
  • At the end of the day, … At the end of the day, your health is what matters.
  • I'm afraid (that) … / I'm afraid so / I'm afraid not — 悪い知らせを丁寧に伝える:I'm afraid I can't come.

As far as I concern です。 As far as I'm concerned, …
