形と使い方

when / as soon as / until + 現在形, … will — 未来のことでもこれらの語の後は現在形

1.文の形

未来の2つの出来事について話すとき、文はふつう2つの部分からなります：主節（will、be going to、命令文など）と、when、as soon as、until、before、after… で始まる時を表す節です。大事なルール：時を表す節では、意味が未来でも現在形を使います。

主節	接続詞 + 時を表す節（現在形）

Please wait here	until I come back.
Let's buy some snacks	before the film starts.
She'll feel better	after she gets some rest.

2つの部分は入れ替えられます。時を表す節が先に来るときはコンマを入れ、後に来るときはふつう不要です。

When I get home, I'll call you.
家に着いたら電話するね。（時を表す節が先 — コンマあり）
I'll call you when I get home.
家に着いたら電話するね。（時を表す節が後 — コンマなし）

未来の話なので、つい「when I will get home」と言ってしまう学習者がたくさんいます。英語で未来の形を使うのは主節だけで、when / as soon as / until… の部分は現在形のままです：when I get home。

2.よく使う接続詞

once	いったん〜したら、〜したらすぐ	Once you try it, you'll love it.
by the time	〜するころには（遅くともその時までに）	By the time we get there, the shop will be closed.

not … until は、主節の動作がもう一方の後になって初めて起こる — それより前には起こらない、という意味です。

I won't buy a new phone until this one stops working.
今のスマホが動かなくなるまで、新しいのは買いません。
Don't open the oven until the cake is ready.
ケーキが焼き上がるまでオーブンを開けないで。

3.接続詞の後の現在完了形と現在進行形

when、after、as soon as、until… の後では、現在完了形（have/has + V3）を使って、最初の動作が2つ目の動作の始まる前に完全に終わることを表せます。その時点で進行中のことには現在進行形を使います。ただし will は使わないこと。

I'll lend you this book when I've finished it.
この本、読み終わったら貸してあげるね。（まず読み終えて、それから貸す）
When I see Minh, I'll give him your message.
ミンに会ったら、伝言を伝えておくね。（2つがほぼ同時に起こる）
You can watch TV after you've done your homework.
宿題が終わったらテレビを見ていいよ。
I'll read a book while I'm waiting for you.
あなたを待っている間、本を読んでいます。（現在進行形）

after と as soon as では、現在形と現在完了形はふつう同じ意味です：after I finish = after I've finished。when では、上の例のように2つの形で意味が変わることがあります。

4.when か if か

どちらも未来のことに現在形を使いますが、意味が違います。when = 起こることは確実で、あとは時間の問題。if = 起こるかもしれないし、起こらないかもしれない。レッスン「条件文」も参照してください。

I'll call you when I get to the hotel.
ホテルに着いたら電話するね。（必ず着くとわかっている）
I'll call you if I get lost.
道に迷ったら電話するね。（迷うかどうかはわからない）
When the shop opens, I'll buy some bread.
お店が開いたら、パンを買います。（必ず開く）
If the shop is still open, I'll buy some bread.
お店がまだ開いていたら、パンを買います。（開いているかわからない）

日本語の「〜たら」は when にも if にもなるので要注意です。迷ったら、それが確実に起こるかを考えましょう。「I'll let you know when I get the results」（結果は必ず届く）。「Call me if there's a problem」（問題は起こらないかもしれない）。

5.when の後でも will を使う場合

上のルールは時を表す節だけのものです。when が疑問文を始めるときや、when の節が動詞（know、ask、tell me、wonder… の後）の目的語で「いつ」という意味のときは、ふつうに will を使います。

When will you be back?
いつ戻りますか？（疑問文 — will）
I don't know when she'll arrive.
彼女がいつ着くのかわかりません。（know の目的語 — will）
Tell me when you arrive.
着いたら教えてね。（時を表す節 — 現在形）
Tell me when you'll arrive.
いつ着くのか教えてね。（いつかをたずねている — will）

6.よくある間違い

~~I'll call you when I will arrive.~~
I'll call you when I arrive.
時を表す節では will ではなく現在形を使います。
~~As soon as she will finish, we'll leave.~~
As soon as she finishes, we'll leave.
as soon as の後は現在形です。
~~We won't start until he will come.~~
We won't start until he comes.
until の後は現在形です。
~~When he get home, I'll tell him.~~
When he gets home, I'll tell him.
現在形なので、he/she/it には -s が必要です。
~~After I'll finish work, I'm going to the gym.~~
After I finish work, I'm going to the gym.
主節が何であっても、after の節は現在形のままです。
~~I'll lend you the book when I will have read it.~~
I'll lend you the book when I've read it.
「終わっている」ことを表すには、will have ではなく現在完了形を使います。

例文

I'll send you the photos when I get home.
As soon as the rain stops, we'll go out.
I'll wait here until you come back.
I'll text you as soon as I land in Đà Nẵng.
