동사 + to 부정사

중급

Verb + to-infinitive

형태와 쓰임

decide / manage / seem / try + to 동사 — 뒤에 to가 오는 동사

1.형태

많은 동사 뒤에는 to + 동사원형(to부정사)이 옵니다. 시제에 따라 바뀌는 것은 첫 번째 동사뿐이고, to + 동사 부분은 바뀌지 않습니다.

형태예
긍정문동사 + to VWe decided to stay.
첫 번째 동사의 부정don't / didn't + 동사 + to VHe didn't manage to finish.
두 번째 동사의 부정동사 + not to VI promised not to tell.
의문문do / did + S + 동사 + to V?Do you plan to stay long?
다른 시제has agreed / will try / was hoping + to VShe has agreed to help.

not은 to 앞에 둡니다: decided not to go. 말할 때는 “to not go”도 들리지만, 표준 형태는 not to go이고 글에서는 이쪽이 더 안전합니다.

4.뜻은 비슷해도 형태는 다르다

뜻을 보고 형태를 짐작하지 마세요. 거의 같은 뜻의 동사 짝이라도 하나는 to + 동사, 다른 하나는 -ing를 쓰는 경우가 많습니다(「동사 + -ing」 레슨 참고). look forward to에 주의하세요: 여기서 to는 전치사라서 뒤에 -ing가 옵니다.
