Lección 69 · Etapa 6: Patrones verbales
Verbo + to-infinitivo
IntermedioVerb + to-infinitive
Forma y uso
decide / manage / seem / try + to verbo — verbos seguidos de to
1.Forma
| Estructura | Ejemplo | |
|---|---|---|
| Afirmativa | verbo + to V | We decided to stay. |
| Negativa (verbo principal) | don't / didn't + verbo + to V | He didn't manage to finish. |
| Negativa (segundo verbo) | verbo + not to V | I promised not to tell. |
| Pregunta | do / did + S + verbo + to V? | Do you plan to stay long? |
| Otros tiempos | has agreed / will try / was hoping + to V | She has agreed to help. |
not va antes de to: decided not to go. En el habla se oye “to not go”, pero not to go es la forma estándar y la opción más segura por escrito.
2.Verbos seguidos de to + verbo
1. Querer, esperar, planear, decidir: want, would like, hope, plan, decide, intend, expect, aim, choose
I'm hoping to visit Hoi An this summer.
Espero visitar Hoi An este verano.
We've decided to rent a smaller flat.
Hemos decidido alquilar un apartamento más pequeño.
Nam plans to open his own cafe one day.
Nam piensa abrir su propio café algún día.
2. Prometer, aceptar, negarse, ofrecerse, amenazar, quedar: promise, agree, refuse, offer, threaten, arrange
My neighbour offered to water my plants while I was away.
Mi vecino se ofreció a regar mis plantas mientras yo no estaba.
The taxi driver refused to use the meter.
We've arranged to meet at eight.
Quedamos en vernos a las ocho.
3. Intentar, lograr, no lograr, aprender, poder permitirse: try, manage, fail, attempt, learn, can't afford
I finally managed to fix the printer.
Por fin logré arreglar la impresora. (manage = conseguir hacer algo difícil)
He failed to notice the red light.
My son is learning to ride a bike.
Students often can't afford to buy new textbooks.
Linh seems to know everyone here.
I tend to talk too fast when I'm nervous.
Suelo hablar demasiado rápido cuando estoy nervioso.
He pretended to be asleep.

Do you happen to know her number?
¿Por casualidad sabes su número?
3.Seem, appear, pretend: to be -ing y to have + V3
Después de seem, appear, pretend, tend… puedes usar to + verbo, y también to be + -ing (algo en curso) y to have + participio (algo que pasó antes).
| Estructura | Significado | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| seem to + V | ahora o en general | She seems to like her new job. |
| seem to be + -ing | en curso ahora | The baby seems to be sleeping. |
| seem to have + V3 | pasó antes | Someone seems to have taken my umbrella. |
| It seems (that) … It seems (that) she likes her new job. |
Verbos como decide, know, learn, explain y wonder también pueden ir con palabra interrogativa + to + verbo: I don't know what to say. Mira la lección “Palabra interrogativa + to-infinitivo”.
4.Significado parecido, estructura distinta
| + to V | + -ing |
|---|---|
| hope to win | look forward to winning |
| plan to move | consider moving |
| refuse to answer | avoid answering |
| agree to help | don't mind helping |
| decide to go | suggest going |
| want to stop | feel like stopping |
I hope to see you soon. / I'm looking forward to seeing you.
Espero verte pronto. / Tengo muchas ganas de verte.
She agreed to lend me her notes.
Cuando to es una preposición de verdad (look forward to, be used to, object to), va seguido de -ing; mira la lección “Preposición + -ing”.
5.Errores comunes

decide + to + verbo.

hope + to + verbo.

refuse + to + verbo.
