Lição 69 · Etapa 6: Padrões verbais
Verbo + to-infinitivo
IntermédioVerb + to-infinitive
Forma e uso
decide / manage / seem / try + to verbo — verbos seguidos de to
1.Forma
| Estrutura | Exemplo | |
|---|---|---|
| Afirmativa | verb + to V | We decided to stay. |
| Negativa (primeiro verbo) | don't / didn't + verb + to V | He didn't manage to finish. |
| Negativa (segundo verbo) | verb + not to V | I promised not to tell. |
| Pergunta | do / did + S + verb + to V? | Do you plan to stay long? |
| Outros tempos | has agreed / will try / was hoping + to V | She has agreed to help. |
O not vem antes do to: decided not to go. Na fala você vai ouvir “to not go”, mas not to go é a forma padrão e a escolha mais segura na escrita.
2.Verbos seguidos de to + verbo
1. Querer, esperar, planejar, decidir: want, would like, hope, plan, decide, intend, expect, aim, choose
I'm hoping to visit Hoi An this summer.
Espero visitar Hoi An neste verão.
We've decided to rent a smaller flat.
Decidimos alugar um apartamento menor.
Nam plans to open his own cafe one day.
O Nam planeja abrir o próprio café um dia.
2. Prometer, concordar, recusar-se, oferecer-se, ameaçar, combinar: promise, agree, refuse, offer, threaten, arrange
My neighbour offered to water my plants while I was away.
The taxi driver refused to use the meter.
O taxista se recusou a ligar o taxímetro.
We've arranged to meet at eight.
Combinamos de nos encontrar às oito.
I finally managed to fix the printer.
Finalmente consegui consertar a impressora. (manage = conseguir fazer algo difícil)
He failed to notice the red light.
Ele não percebeu o sinal vermelho.
My son is learning to ride a bike.
Students often can't afford to buy new textbooks.
4. Parecer, tender a, fingir, por acaso: seem, appear, tend, pretend, happen

A Linh parece conhecer todo mundo aqui.
I tend to talk too fast when I'm nervous.
Costumo falar rápido demais quando estou nervoso.

3.Seem, appear, pretend: to be -ing e to have + V3
Depois de seem, appear, pretend, tend… você pode usar to + verbo, e também to be + -ing (algo em andamento) e to have + particípio passado (algo que aconteceu antes).
| Estrutura | Significado | Exemplo |
|---|---|---|
| seem to + V | agora ou em geral | She seems to like her new job. |
| seem to be + -ing | em andamento agora | The baby seems to be sleeping. |
| seem to have + V3 | aconteceu antes | Someone seems to have taken my umbrella. |
| It seems (that) … It seems (that) she likes her new job. |
Verbos como decide, know, learn, explain e wonder também aceitam palavra interrogativa + to + verbo: I don't know what to say. Veja a lição “Palavra interrogativa + to-infinitivo”.
4.Sentido parecido, estrutura diferente
| + to V | + -ing |
|---|---|
| hope to win | look forward to winning |
| plan to move | consider moving |
| refuse to answer | avoid answering |
| agree to help | don't mind helping |
| decide to go | suggest going |
| want to stop | feel like stopping |
I hope to see you soon. / I'm looking forward to seeing you.
Espero ver você em breve. / Estou ansioso para ver você.
She agreed to lend me her notes.
Ela concordou em me emprestar as anotações dela.
Quando o to é uma preposição de verdade (look forward to, be used to, object to), ele é seguido de -ing — veja a lição “Preposição + -ing”.
