Lezione 69 · Tappa 6: Costruzioni verbali
Verbo + to-infinito
IntermedioVerb + to-infinitive
Forma e uso
decide / manage / seem / try + to verbo — i verbi seguiti da to
1.Forma
| Struttura | Esempio | |
|---|---|---|
| Affermativa | verb + to V | We decided to stay. |
| Negativa (primo verbo) | don't / didn't + verb + to V | He didn't manage to finish. |
| Negativa (secondo verbo) | verb + not to V | I promised not to tell. |
| Domanda | do / did + S + verb + to V? | Do you plan to stay long? |
| Altri tempi | has agreed / will try / was hoping + to V | She has agreed to help. |
not va prima di to: decided not to go. Nel parlato sentirai anche “to not go”, ma not to go è la forma standard e la scelta più sicura nello scritto.
2.Verbi seguiti da to + verbo
1. Volere, sperare, progettare, decidere: want, would like, hope, plan, decide, intend, expect, aim, choose

Spero di visitare Hoi An quest'estate.
We've decided to rent a smaller flat.
Nam plans to open his own cafe one day.

4. Sembrare, tendere, fingere, capitare: seem, appear, tend, pretend, happen

3.Seem, appear, pretend: to be -ing e to have + V3
Dopo seem, appear, pretend, tend… puoi usare to + verbo, ma anche to be + -ing (qualcosa in corso) e to have + participio passato (qualcosa successo prima).
| Struttura | Significato | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| seem to + V | ora o in generale | She seems to like her new job. |
| seem to be + -ing | in corso adesso | The baby seems to be sleeping. |
| seem to have + V3 | è successo prima | Someone seems to have taken my umbrella. |
| It seems (that) … It seems (that) she likes her new job. |
Verbi come decide, know, learn, explain e wonder possono reggere anche parola interrogativa + to + verbo: I don't know what to say. Vedi la lezione “Parola interrogativa + to-infinito”.
4.Significato simile, struttura diversa
Attenzione a look forward to: qui to è una preposizione, quindi segue -ing.
| + to V | + -ing |
|---|---|
| hope to win | look forward to winning |
| plan to move | consider moving |
| refuse to answer | avoid answering |
| agree to help | don't mind helping |
| decide to go | suggest going |
| want to stop | feel like stopping |
I hope to see you soon. / I'm looking forward to seeing you.

Quando to è una vera preposizione (look forward to, be used to, object to), è seguito da -ing: vedi la lezione “Preposizione + -ing”.
