Lección 70 · Etapa 6: Patrones verbales
-ing o to: remember, forget, stop, try, need
Intermedio-ing or to: remember, forget, stop, try, need
Forma y uso
remember doing vs remember to do — verbos que cambian de significado con -ing o to
| Verbo | + -ing | + to V |
|---|---|---|
| forget | olvidar algo que hiciste (normalmente: I'll never forget …)
2.Remember, forget, regret
remember: algo que hiciste (-ing) o algo que tienes que hacer (to)
I remember locking the door, so don't worry.
Remember to lock the door when you go out.
I'll never forget seeing the rice terraces in Sa Pa.
Sorry, I forgot to reply to your message.
I regret not learning to swim when I was young.
Me arrepiento de no haber aprendido a nadar de pequeño.
We regret to announce that the 9:15 train to Hue has been cancelled.
3.Stop y go on
stop + -ing = dejar de hacerlo. stop + to + verbo = detenerse (dejar lo que estás haciendo) para hacer otra cosa; aquí to indica finalidad.
My dad stopped smoking five years ago.
On the way to Da Lat, we stopped to buy some strawberries.
De camino a Da Lat, paramos a comprar fresas.
go on + -ing = seguir con la misma actividad. go on + to + verbo = terminar una cosa y pasar a otra nueva.
She went on talking even after the bell rang.
After the introduction, the teacher went on to explain the homework.
I tried to open the jar, but the lid wouldn't move.
If you can't sleep, try drinking some warm milk.
I need to charge my phone.
Necesito cargar el teléfono.
This shirt needs ironing.
Hay que planchar esta camisa. (= needs to be ironed)
Di needs ironing o needs to be ironed.
Pero can't help + -ing = no poder evitar.
Can you help me (to) carry these boxes?
¿Me ayudas a cargar estas cajas?
I couldn't help smiling when I read her card.
5.Like, love, hate, start…: cambia poco o nada
Con like, love, hate, prefer, can't bear, start, begin, continue, -ing y to + verbo significan casi lo mismo.
It started raining just as we left. = It started to rain just as we left.
Empezó a llover justo cuando salíamos.
I love cooking for my family. = I love to cook for my family.
Me encanta cocinar para mi familia.
- El inglés británico suele usar like + -ing para el disfrute y like + to + verbo para un hábito que te parece sensato: I like to get to the airport early. El inglés americano usa like + to + verbo de forma más amplia, también para el disfrute.
- would like / would love / would hate / would prefer casi siempre van con to + verbo: Would you like to join us? Mira la lección “Would like” para un deseo cortés.
- prefer: prefer -ing to -ing, o prefer to + verbo rather than + verbo: I prefer walking to driving. / I prefer to walk rather than drive.
- Los nativos suelen evitar dos formas -ing seguidas con start / begin / continue: It's starting to rain (más natural que “starting raining”).
