Vergelijken met “as … as”

Met as + bijvoeglijk naamwoord/bijwoord + as zeg je dat twee dingen gelijk zijn. Met not erbij betekent het minder. Het bijvoeglijk naamwoord in het midden blijft in de gewone vorm (geen -er, geen more).

💡Je hebt twee keer as nodig: as tall as my dad — zoals “(net) zo lang als”. Het tweede woord is niet than of like.

1. Twee dingen zijn gelijk — met just benadruk je “precies hetzelfde”

• Your English is as good as mine.

  Jouw Engels is net zo goed als het mijne.

• Hue is just as beautiful as Hoi An.

  Hue is net zo mooi als Hoi An.

2. Minder: not as … as — een zachtere, natuurlijkere manier om less … than te zeggen. In ontkenningen zie je soms not so … as, met dezelfde betekenis.

• This coffee isn't as strong as the one at home.

  Deze koffie is niet zo sterk als die van thuis.

• The test wasn't as difficult as I expected.

  De toets was niet zo moeilijk als ik had verwacht.

3. Met bijwoorden: vergelijken hoe mensen iets doen

• Thao sings as beautifully as her mother.

  Thao zingt net zo mooi als haar moeder.

• I can't run as fast as you.

  Ik kan niet zo hard rennen als jij.

4. as much / as many — hoeveelheden vergelijken: much + ontelbaar zelfstandig naamwoord, many + meervoud

• I don't earn as much as my brother.

  Ik verdien niet zoveel als mijn broer.

• There aren't as many rice fields as before.

  Er zijn niet meer zoveel rijstvelden als vroeger.

5. as … as possible / as … as I can — zo veel als mogelijk

• Please send me the report as soon as possible.

  Stuur me het verslag alstublieft zo snel mogelijk.

• I ran as fast as I could.

  Ik rende zo hard als ik kon.

Vanaf drie keer kun je ook three times bigger than / three times more expensive than zeggen — dat is heel gewoon. Maar voor twee keer gebruik je twice as … as (twice bigger klinkt voor de meeste moedertaalsprekers fout).

• The bus ticket costs half as much as the train ticket.

  Het buskaartje kost half zoveel als het treinkaartje.

• The new bridge is three times as wide as the old one.

  De nieuwe brug is drie keer zo breed als de oude.

Om te zeggen dat twee dingen identiek zijn, gebruik je the same (+ zelfstandig naamwoord) as — niet like.

• Your phone is the same as mine.

  Jouw telefoon is dezelfde als de mijne.

• Hoa was born in the same year as me.

  Hoa is in hetzelfde jaar geboren als ik.

Na de tweede as werkt het zoals na than: gebruik me, him, her (spreektaal) of onderwerp + hulpwerkwoord (I am, she does). Het hulpwerkwoord moet in de juiste tijd staan.

• He isn't as patient as me. = He isn't as patient as I am.

  Hij is niet zo geduldig als ik.

• Today I'm not as busy as I was yesterday.

  Vandaag heb ik het niet zo druk als gisteren. (niet: as I'm yesterday)

💡Gebruik the same as voor dingen die identiek zijn (My bag is the same as yours), en like voor dingen die op elkaar lijken (She looks like her mum). Meng ze niet tot “the same like”.

• ✗My room is as big than yours.

  ✓My room is as big as yours.

  as … as, niet than.

• ✗This bag is as heavier as that one.

  ✓This bag is as heavy as that one.

  Gebruik de gewone vorm van het bijvoeglijk naamwoord tussen de twee keer as.

• ✗My brother is as tall like my father.

  ✓My brother is as tall as my father.

  Het tweede woord is ook as.

• ✗This flat is as twice big as ours.

  ✓This flat is twice as big as ours.

  Twice staat vóór de eerste as.

• ✗Nam doesn't speak English as fluent as his sister.

  ✓Nam doesn't speak English as fluently as his sister.

  Het zegt iets over een werkwoord → bijwoord.

• ✗Your bag is the same like mine.

  ✓Your bag is the same as mine.
