PrincipianteComparing with “as … as”
Forma e uso
as + agg + as — dire che due cose sono uguali
1.Forma
Usa as + aggettivo/avverbio + as per dire che due cose sono uguali. Aggiungi not e il significato diventa meno. L'aggettivo in mezzo resta nella forma semplice (niente -er, niente more).
| Struttura | Esempio | |
|---|---|---|
| Uguaglianza | as + adj/adv + as | My brother is as tall as my dad now. |
| Minoranza | not as + adj/adv + as | Da Lat isn't as hot as Hanoi. |
| Domanda | Is … as + adj + as …? | Is Da Nang as expensive as Hanoi? |
| Con i sostantivi | as much / as many + sostantivo + as | I don't have as much free time as you. |
Servono due as: as tall as my dad. La seconda parola non è than né like; attenzione al nostro “alto come mio padre”: in inglese anche il secondo termine è as.
2.Quando si usa
1. Due cose sono uguali: aggiungi just per sottolineare “esattamente uguale”
Your English is as good as mine.
Il tuo inglese è buono quanto il mio.
Hue is just as beautiful as Hoi An.
Hue è bella proprio quanto Hoi An.
2. Meno: not as … as, un modo più morbido e più naturale di dire less … than. Nelle negative a volte troverai not so … as, con lo stesso significato.
This coffee isn't as strong as the one at home.
Questo caffè non è forte come quello di casa.
The test wasn't as difficult as I expected.
L'esame non era difficile come mi aspettavo.
3. Con gli avverbi: confrontare come le persone fanno le cose
Thao sings as beautifully as her mother.
Thao canta bene quanto sua madre.
I can't run as fast as you.
Non riesco a correre veloce come te.
4. as much / as many: confrontare quantità; much + sostantivo non numerabile, many + sostantivo plurale
I don't earn as much as my brother.
Non guadagno quanto mio fratello.
There aren't as many rice fields as before.
Non ci sono più tante risaie come una volta.
5. as … as possible / as … as I can: al massimo grado possibile
Please send me the report as soon as possible.
Mandami il resoconto il prima possibile, per favore.
I ran as fast as I could.
Ho corso più veloce che potevo.
3.Quanto vicini? just, nearly, twice…
| Parola prima di as | Significato | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| just | esattamente uguale | The cheap phone is just as good as the expensive one. |
| nearly / almost | molto vicino, ma un po' meno | Mai is nearly as tall as Lan. |
| not quite | un po' meno | The second film isn't quite as good as the first. |
| not nearly | molto meno | The flight wasn't nearly as bumpy as I feared. |
| twice / three times / half | due volte, tre volte, metà | Our new flat is twice as big as the old one. |
Da tre volte in su puoi anche dire three times bigger than / three times more expensive than: è molto comune. Ma per due volte usa twice as … as (twice bigger suona sbagliato alla maggior parte dei madrelingua).
The bus ticket costs half as much as the train ticket.
Il biglietto dell'autobus costa la metà di quello del treno.
The new bridge is three times as wide as the old one.
Il nuovo ponte è tre volte più largo di quello vecchio.
4.The same as; as me o as I am?
Per dire che due cose sono identiche, usa the same (+ sostantivo) as, non like.
Your phone is the same as mine.
Il tuo telefono è uguale al mio.
Hoa was born in the same year as me.
Hoa è nata nel mio stesso anno.
Dopo il secondo as funziona come dopo than: usa me, him, her (parlato) oppure soggetto + ausiliare (I am, she does). L'ausiliare deve essere al tempo giusto.
He isn't as patient as me. = He isn't as patient as I am.
Lui non è paziente quanto me.
Today I'm not as busy as I was yesterday.
Oggi non sono impegnato quanto ieri. (non: as I'm yesterday)
Usa the same as per le cose identiche (My bag is the same as yours) e like per quelle simili (She looks like her mum). Non mescolarli in “the same like”.
5.Errori comuni
