“Too … to” / “enough to”
PrincipianteForma e uso
too + agg + to verbo, agg + enough + to verbo — troppo o abbastanza per fare qualcosa
1.Forma
Vanno in posizioni diverse:
| Struttura | Significato | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| too + agg./avv. (+ to + verbo) | più del giusto, quindi non puoi | This coffee is too hot to drink. |
| agg./avv. + enough (+ to + verbo) | quanto serve | She's old enough to vote. |
| not + agg./avv. + enough (+ to + verbo) | meno di quanto serve | I'm not tall enough to reach the shelf. |
We don't have enough money to buy a car. |
| too much / too many + sostantivo | più di quanto vorresti | There are too many people here. |
Per dire chi compie l'azione, aggiungi for + complemento prima di to + verbo: too heavy for me to carry.
The box was too heavy for me to carry.
La scatola era troppo pesante perché la portassi io.
Is the water warm enough to swim in?
I'm too tired to cook tonight.
Stasera sono troppo stanco per cucinare.
I got up too late to catch the bus.
2. not … enough: meno di quanto serve
My son is only fifteen, so he isn't old enough to drive.
He didn't run fast enough to catch the bus.
She's old enough to decide for herself.
È abbastanza grande per decidere da sola.
Is the room big enough for 30 people?
La sala è abbastanza grande per 30 persone?
4. Con i sostantivi: enough / too much / too many; enough può anche stare da solo: I've had enough.
We don't have enough time to see everything today.
I drank too much coffee this morning.
Stamattina ho bevuto troppo caffè.
There are too many tourists here in summer.
D'estate qui ci sono troppi turisti.
No more rice for me — I've had enough, thanks.
Basta riso per me, ne ho mangiato abbastanza, grazie.
3.Too, very o so … that?
| Significato | Esempio | |
|---|---|---|
| very hot | molto caldo, ma si può ancora | The tea is very hot, but I can drink it. |
| too hot | così caldo che non si può | The tea is too hot to drink. |
| so hot (that) … | caldo, ed ecco la conseguenza | The tea was so hot (that) I burned my tongue. |
Per rafforzare o attenuare too, usa much too / far too oppure a bit / a little too, non too much davanti a un aggettivo.
These jeans are much too small for me now.
Ormai questi jeans mi stanno decisamente troppo piccoli.
It's a bit too expensive to eat there every day.
Per fare un complimento usa so o really: This is so good!
The tea is too hot to drink.
Il tè è troppo caldo da bere. (non: to drink it)
The water was too cold to swim in.
Dopo too / enough si usa to + verbo, non -ing né for + -ing.
It's too dangerous to swim in this river.
(non: too dangerous swimming)
My daughter is too young to go to school.
Mia figlia è troppo piccola per andare a scuola. (non: for going)
