“too … to” / “enough to”
初級“Too … to” / “enough to”
too + 形容詞 + to 動詞,形容詞 + enough + to 動詞 — 過於或足夠
|---|---|---|
| too + 形容詞/副詞 (+ to + 動詞) | 超過合適的程度,所以做不了 | This coffee is too hot to drink. |
| 形容詞/副詞 + enough (+ to + 動詞) | 達到需要的程度 | She's old enough to vote. |
| not + 形容詞/副詞 + enough (+ to + 動詞) | 沒達到需要的程度 | I'm not tall enough to reach the shelf. |
| enough + 名詞 (+ to + 動詞) | 所需要的數量 | We don't have enough money to buy a car. |
| too much / too many + 名詞 | 比你想要的多 | There are too many people here. |
要說明誰做這件事,在 to + 動詞 前面加 for + 賓語:too heavy for me to carry。
The box was too heavy for me to carry.
Is the water warm enough to swim in?
注意位置:enough 放在形容詞或副詞後面(old enough、fast enough),但放在名詞前面(enough money、enough time)。
I'm too tired to cook tonight.
I got up too late to catch the bus.
2. not … enough:
My son is only fifteen, so he isn't old enough to drive.
He didn't run fast enough to catch the bus.
3. enough:
She's old enough to decide for herself.
Is the room big enough for 30 people?
4. 和名詞連用:enough / too much / too many——enough 也可以單獨使用:I've had enough。
We don't have enough time to see everything today.
I drank too much coffee this morning.
There are too many tourists here in summer.
No more rice for me — I've had enough, thanks.
3.Too、very 還是 so … that?
|---|---|---|
| very hot | 很燙,但還是可以喝 | The tea is very hot, but I can drink it. |
| too hot | 燙得沒法喝 | The tea is too hot to drink. |
| so hot (that) … | The tea was so hot (that) I burned my tongue. |
要加強或減弱 too 的語氣,用 much too / far too 或 a bit / a little too——形容詞前面不用 too much。
These jeans are much too small for me now.
It's a bit too expensive to eat there every day.
中文說“太好了”“太漂亮了”是誇獎,但英語不能直接說 too good 來誇獎:要用 so 或 really:This is so good!(You're too kind 這樣的固定說法是例外。)
The tea is too hot to drink.
(不說:to drink it)
The water was too cold to swim in.
too / enough 後面用 to + 動詞——不用 -ing,也不用 for + -ing。
It's too dangerous to swim in this river.
(不說:too dangerous swimming)
My daughter is too young to go to school.
(不說:for going)
He is enough old to vote.He is old enough to vote.
It was very cold to go swimming. It was too cold to go swimming.
The tea is too hot to drink it.The tea is too hot to drink.
It's too much expensive to eat there every day. It's too expensive to eat there every day.
形容詞前面用 too(或 much too),不用 too much。
This jacket is too small to me to wear. This jacket is too small for me to wear.
We don't have enough of money. We don't have enough money.
enough + 名詞;enough of 只用於 the/my/them… 前面。
