“Too … to” / “enough to”

Too, gerekenden ya da kabul edilebilir olandan fazla demektir (çoğu zaman bir şeyi yapamayacağın kadar); enough ise gerektiği kadar demektir. Farklı yerlere gelirler:

Eylemi kimin yaptığını söylemek için to + fiilden önce for + nesne ekle: too heavy for me to carry.

• The box was too heavy for me to carry.

  Kutu benim taşıyamayacağım kadar ağırdı.

• Is the water warm enough to swim in?

  Su yüzmek için yeterince sıcak mı?

💡Yerlerine dikkat et: enough sıfat ya da zarftan sonra gelir (old enough, fast enough), ama isimden önce gelir (enough money, enough time).

1. too: kabul edilebilirden fazla, bu yüzden bir şey mümkün değil ya da iyi değil

• I'm too tired to cook tonight.

  Bu akşam yemek yapamayacak kadar yorgunum.

• I got up too late to catch the bus.

  Otobüse yetişemeyecek kadar geç kalktım.

2. not … enough: gerekenden az

• My son is only fifteen, so he isn't old enough to drive.

  Oğlum daha on beş yaşında, yani araba kullanacak yaşta değil.

• He didn't run fast enough to catch the bus.

  Otobüse yetişecek kadar hızlı koşmadı.

3. enough: gerektiği kadar — sorun yok

• She's old enough to decide for herself.

  Kendi kararlarını verecek yaşta.

• Is the room big enough for 30 people?

  Oda 30 kişi için yeterince büyük mü?

4. İsimlerle: enough / too much / too many — enough tek başına da kullanılabilir: I've had enough.

• We don't have enough time to see everything today.

  Bugün her şeyi görmeye yetecek kadar vaktimiz yok.

• I drank too much coffee this morning.

  Bu sabah çok fazla kahve içtim.

• There are too many tourists here in summer.

  Yazın burada çok fazla turist oluyor.

• No more rice for me — I've had enough, thanks.

  Bana daha fazla pilav koyma — doydum, teşekkürler.

too'yu güçlendirmek ya da yumuşatmak için much too / far too ya da a bit / a little too kullan — sıfattan önce too much değil.

• These jeans are much too small for me now.

  Bu kot pantolon artık bana fazlasıyla küçük.

• It's a bit too expensive to eat there every day.

  Orada her gün yemek yemek biraz fazla pahalı.

💡Too genellikle olumsuz bir anlam taşır — iyi olandan fazla. Bir şeyi övmek için so ya da really kullan: This is so good! (You're too kind gibi kalıplaşmış ifadeler istisnadır.)

Cümlenin öznesi aynı zamanda to + fiilin etkilediği şeyse (the tea = içtiğin şey), onu sonda tekrarlama. Fiil bir edat gerektiriyorsa (swim in, sit on), edatı koru.

• The tea is too hot to drink.

  Çay içilemeyecek kadar sıcak. (to drink it değil)

• The water was too cold to swim in.

  Su, içinde yüzülemeyecek kadar soğuktu.

Cümle It (boş özne) ile başlıyorsa nesne kalır. too / enough'tan sonra to + fiil kullan — -ing ya da for + -ing değil.

• It's too dangerous to swim in this river.

  Bu nehirde yüzmek çok tehlikeli. (too dangerous swimming değil)

• My daughter is too young to go to school.

  Kızım okula gidemeyecek kadar küçük. (for going değil)

• ✗He is enough old to vote.

  ✓He is old enough to vote.

  Enough sıfattan sonra gelir.

• ✗It was very cold to go swimming.

  ✓It was too cold to go swimming.

  Yapamazdın → very değil too.

• ✗The tea is too hot to drink it.

  ✓The tea is too hot to drink.

  it'i tekrarlama — çay zaten içtiğin şey.

• ✗It's too much expensive to eat there every day.

  ✓It's too expensive to eat there every day.

  Sıfattan önce too much değil too (ya da much too) kullan.

• ✗This jacket is too small to me to wear.

  ✓This jacket is too small for me to wear.

  Kişi → for + nesne.

• ✗We don't have enough of money.

  ✓We don't have enough money.

  Enough + isim; enough of sadece the/my/them… ile kullanılır.
