1
someone british once said to me god you're so annoying
2
and i said thank you
3
because i knew exactly what they meant in the uk there
4
is a whole secret language running underneath what we actually say
5
and if you don't know that language you will misread us and misunderstand us constantly.
6
You'll think we hate you when we like you.
7
You'll think we like you when we are furious with you.
8
And you will spend years being baffled by a nation who apologize to items of furniture that they bump into,
9
but who will absolutely never tell you they enjoy your company.
10
Unless perhaps they are drunk but that's a video for another day.
11
Today I am going to teach you the subtext of British communication.
12
The real signs that someone British likes you and I promise you some of these will surprise you.
13
Don't forget to check out the free pdfs that I offer.
14
Links are in the description below.
15
The first sign that someone British actually likes you, they start teasing you.
16
Let me give you an example.
17
Imagine this.
18
You've been working somewhere for a few weeks, maybe a month or two.
19
You walk into the office one morning and a colleague says, oh good, you're here.
20
Now we can all collectively lower our standards together.
21
The wrong reaction would be to take offense.
22
The right reaction would be relief.
23
Because this colleague has just told you in the most british way possible
24
that they are comfortable with you we don't tease anybody we don't tease complete strangers
25
that would be mortifying we tease people we've quietly decided
26
that we like
27
because it lets us show warmth without having to say anything
28
as horrifying as i enjoy your company a good way to see it is as affection
29
with plausible deniability and the key once again you probably know what i am going to say it's
30
that word i always use yes the key is the tone
31
if it is gentle a little absurd playful there is no real sting to it
32
if it makes you both laugh you're in the second sign that someone british likes you they start complaining to you.
33
Not about you.
34
Again, that's different.
35
Complaining to you.
36
Complaining in the UK is intimacy.
37
With strangers, we complain about safe things.
38
The weather, train delays, the fact that there are now 17 types of oat milk and none of them froth properly.
39
But when someone starts properly venting to you, that's a good word, vent.
40
We often say, sorry for the vent.
41
They start venting properly to you about their commute, their manager, their partner, anything, anything personal.
42
That signals trust.
43
They trust you enough to do that.
44
They have decided that you will understand and that you will nod
45
and look horrified in the right places you might even contribute your own grievances and indeed
46
if someone starts venting to you you should it shows mutual
47
trust you will spend a companionable 10 minutes getting quietly outraged together in short
48
if someone is bringing you their problems even their petty ones they like you.
49
The third sign is that the politeness starts to drop.
50
When British people first meet you the politeness can almost be aggressive.
51
Oh so sorry no sorry after you you go first.
52
I'm so sorry could I trouble you for a pen?
53
But the thing is very often that level of politeness is actually a form of distance.
54
It's what we do with people we don't yet know how to be around.
55
It's why also our voice our intonation goes up
56
so much we talk really highly
57
when we're being polite sorry would you mind possibly why I don't know we just do
58
so when someone stops saying to you sorry would you mind
59
or could you possibly
60
and instead say something direct like can you move this they
61
haven't become ruder they've become more comfortable with you you have
62
moved from a person I must perform for to a person I can just talk to.
63
And that is a promotion.
64
Again, it means they like you.
65
I will say this doesn't apply if someone is just rude from the beginning, that means they are just rude.
66
The videos that I do are generalisations.
67
Not every single British person is incredibly polite and indirect.
68
These are general things to be aware of.
69
The next sign is that they trust you with humour.
70
British humour has a learning curve.
71
It is mostly irony.
72
Irony and sarcasm.
73
Saying the opposite of what do you mean in a deadpan, dry way and then watching to see if the other person gets it.
74
I unpack British humour more in this video if you are interested.
75
You could cook someone a Michelin star masterpiece meal
76
that has taken you hours and they might just nod and say in a deadpan way,
77
well, it's not completely inedible.
78
And that is a rave review.
79
When a British person starts using that type of humour with you, it means something specific.
80
They think you can handle it.
81
They're not going to have to explain themselves.
82
They can be slightly strange and you can be slightly strange back and that's absolutely fine.
83
Neither of you needs to explain.
84
That's a level of trust that can take some time to reach
85
but once you've reached it there's no better stamp of approval than
86
that trusting you with that kind of humor and the next signal
87
if you're very lucky you will get the invitation a bunch of us are going to the pub this evening
88
if you wanted to come we're doing a barbecue on sunday nothing fancy
89
but you're welcome to come if you want or the most significant one.
90
Shall we grab a cup of tea?
91
Tea in the UK is never just tea.
92
Tea is we sit down.
93
We have time for each other.
94
I want to hear what's going on in your life.
95
That is what tea means.
96
We will make tea for people we like.
97
We will definitely make tea in a moment of crisis.
98
And we will make tea
99
when we have no idea what else we can do for you
100
but we want you to know
101
that we are there for you we will make you tea
102
if someone puts the kettle on just for you you're in there we go
103
if a British person teases you complains to you stops being excessively polite around you
104
and trusts you with their quirky sense of humor
105
or invites you for tea
106
or a pint they like you although they almost certainly won't say
107
that obviously they might say yeah you're all right
108
or yeah i don't mind spending time with you they might
109
say nothing at all just refill your mug without you having to ask
110
but they will know and now so will you
111
if you are more interested in british culture make sure you
112
look at this playlist where i go into more details about british culture
113
and what it means here don't forget to check out your
114
free pdfs links are below as well as details of online lessons
115
and courses with me have a wonderful rest of your day and I will see you in the next one, hopefully.

Говорящий использует 28 сокращённых и редуцированных форм, например don't, you're, we're.

  • Звуки «th»: underneath /ˌʌndɚˈniθ/, warmth /wɔɹmθ/, froth /ˈfɹɒθ/
  • Звуки «sh» и «zh»: ventilation /ˌvɛntɪˈleɪʃ(ə)n/, promotion /pɹəˈmoʊʃn̩/, invitation /ɪnvɪˈteɪʃən/, affection /əˈfɛk.ʃən/, intonation /ɪntəˈneɪʃən/
  • Длинные слова — следите за ударением: ventilation /ˌvɛntɪˈleɪʃ(ə)n/, incredibly /ɪŋˈkɹɛdɪbli/, apologize /əˈpɑləˌd͡ʒaɪz/, invitation /ɪnvɪˈteɪʃən/, intimacy /ˈɪn.tɪ.mə.si/

  • Звонкие согласные в конце слова — не оглушайте их: tease /tiːz/, rude /ɹuːd/, colleague /ˈkɒliːɡ/, aggressive /əˈɡɹɛs.ɪv/, apologize /əˈpɑləˌd͡ʒaɪz/

Shadowing?
